Auditorium Building

This auditorium was designed by Sullivan and Adler and built by Ferdinand Wythe Peck, who wanted to create the world's grandest theater . President Grover Cleveland laid the first cornerstone in 1887.

[Louis Sullivan & Dankmar Adler , 1889] Upon opening for the 1893 World's Fair , it housed a theater , offices & a hotel . Louis Sullivan 's signature designs cover the lobby, library & Ganz Hall.

One of the best known designs of Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan . Completed in 1889 the building is located on S. Michigan Ave. and Congress Parkway. National historic LM in 1975.

Interior is designed by Lois Sullivan and executed by his apprentice , Frank Lloyd Wright.

The 7th Republican National Convention was held June 2–8, 1880 at the Interstate Exposition Building in Chicago. James A. Garfield of Ohio was nominated as the party’s presidential candidate.

The ninth Republican presidential nominating convention was held June 19–25, 1888 at the Auditorium . The delegates nominated Benjamin Harrison, who went on to defeat President Grover Cleveland.
