Book online or by telephone if you are applying for new ID. Otherwise, they may not be able to service you once they exceed their daily quota . Definitely bring a book or have your smart phone w you.
Make online booking a day before. And go early the following morning with a photocopy & original copy of all the required documents . Can get the VISA on that same day.
Office opens at 0830 but a line already starts forming on the first floor at 0630 - 0700. I'd you can't make an appt online, be sure to show up early and get ready to hurry up and wait!
Once you get a number, it's good for the rest of day. If you forgot a document , you can come back in line within the day without making another appointment
Went here for the HKID expecting hell because of all the complaints I read over here... Nothing like that, very straightforward and helpful staff . You people keep crying so my expectations go low :)

Long lines and you will need to go to several floors. Free wifi on each floor but you must reconnect your smart phone on each floor.
People wait here 5-6am to get passports. If you think you're early. You're wrong.

The trick here is to book an appointment online. This does not mean you'll get in at your appointed time, but will halve your waiting time. Allow 1.5 hours for interviews
Take every piece of ID you have and be prepared to spend several hours traveling to different floors for HK ID . Staff are helpful but under resources... Much like any government department .

The douche at counter 15 on level 5 should stop hating people for not understanding his words and instead should try to speak clearer English and Canto when calling out ticket numbers.

Can get your laminated license instantly after submitting the form at the counter. Of course there's a queue but not too bad. (About 20mins during Monday lunch time) - Fred Sun
