this area of the central-coast was inhabited by the Chumash people from 10,000 - 11,000 BC. The Chumash had a large settlement south of Cayucos at Morro Creek.
Cayucos is the Chumash word for "kayak " or "canoe " which was used by the Chumash people to fish in the bay .
