There are usually live demonstrations throughout the day, so be on the lookout. My daughter got to hold bugs and feel "weird wonders of the world."
The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (001 202 633 2214) or the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (001 202 633 1000; free) are children’s favourites.
During the summer go in the evening after 5. The museum is open until 7:30, and you can usually find free parking on Madison right in front of the museums !
It was amazing to stand beside an Apollo Space Capsule and see an actual Moon Rock. Also the Wright Brothers Plane .
Strange that the current Mayor here, Kevin S., checked in at 8:30am -- they don't open until 10am. BUSTED!

Try to go early. It gets pretty packed in the afternoon. Great exhibits. My faves were Exploring the Planets, Amelia Earhart, and the one w/ the ISS. - Christine L
