Stepping inside I forgot about the fake glamorized shell of Hollywood and felt reminded of the grit and hardworking class lifestyle of the city of L.A. Excellent French dip sandwiches & history.
The spiritual home of the French dip , the famous sandwich of carved meat on a jus-soaked roll + 9 cent coffee , 50 cent iced tea , 60 cent lemonade , perfect coleslaw and pies & sawdust covered floors! Read more
Really good French Dip beef sandwich . I ordered "single dip " & still tasted great. Added potato salad & pickles . Ordered a glass of ice tea and the grand total was $11.40. A must for any foodie.
They accept credit card. One of my favorite places in LA. The lamb sandwich double dipped is great especially with the mustard . Don't forget to get a slice of pie .
The original creator of the French dip holds a special place in most angelinos hearts. A must for anyone looking for authentic Los Angeles cuisine. Situated near Alvera st. and china town .
Preserved its name as an old-fashioned diner in Chinatown. The taste pays tribute to its legacy. Original beef french dip sandwich did not disappoint and the Pastrami is just as good.
Philippe's is the spiritual home of the French dip , that famous sandwich of carved meat layered onto a jus-soaked roll, imitated, never successfully, all over the United States for the last 100 years. Read more
Old school classic. Have to appreciate a shop that doesn’t bow to the pressures of LA new. They know who they are, what they’re great at and they just focus on that. Props.
Skip the line , and get into the kitchen! Make a pick-up order that's more than $40, and you get to skip the WHOLE process (and see the kitchen which is cool!)
French dipped sandwiches unlike any other you will taste. Different meats offered like lamb , beef , ham , turkey , pastrami and pork . I recommend the original beef . Classic location since 1951.
Food here is Great, I am such a sucker for their potato salad . This spot is always popping with great food, and great service. Note: If there is a Dodger game going on service maybe long though.
From the atmosphere to the food to the service it all works for me. They are fast. The food is great. Drinks cover the range from kids to adults. Wine is not outrageous, but it is good.
They claim to have invented the French dip . Get the beef with blue cheese , double dipped . The salads ; coleslaw , macaroni , potato are all delicious as well .
I love Philippes and have been going there for 50+ years but I've came to the point where I think they've out priced me. 2 Sandwichs was $16.00 plus. Out of my price range living on a budget
I have been a customer for fifty-five years, and it's always a treat to dine here. The other customers are a melting pot of different ages and clothing styles. The ladies are visitors from Taiwan.
You can now use your credit card to purchase everything from meals at the deli counter to newspapers, candy and merchandise from the counter store up front. Read more
Took 3 trains through the ghetto to get here from LAX because I had time to kill....WOW! I"So worth almost getting shot to try the double-dip beef sandwich ! Potato salad and Nuke mustard incredible!
Beef french dip double-dipped with extra jus on the side. Eat it with spicy mustard . Hear the lamb is worth trying also (maybe with blue cheese )
Cash only , but you'll never find a better French Dip . It's my favorite sandwich so I always order it at restaurants , and Philippe's is the best. No contest.
The place is pure history! Amazing deeped on au jus sandwiches ! Please add extra cheese to your order! Just do it!
Good sandwich . Lines move quickly. I had the beef double dipped , but will get wet next time. Mustard is very spicy and goes very well with the sandwich .
Sandwiches are tasty, none of the other food is worth it. Service is slow, avoid during Dodger games. An LA institution with a Midwestern brat haus vibe
French dip is amazing. Get it on the French roll with mustard ! We stopped in before a dodger game - it was packed but totally worth it.
I like the Pork dip . The coleslaw is good. Potato salad is ok. Be sure to get the pickle . We always come for lunch here when we come to LA.
Nothing more to add that you don't already know. Come hungry, leave satisfied. Just get whatever looks good. Recommend extra house mustard as well at least a double dip
Double dipped beef with cheddar is the way to go. Pair with a cold beer and don't forget to add a little mustard as you eat it
I'm a Beef Dip kinda guy and they make a classic. Chili is something I always get and the potato salad is very good. One of a kind mustard .
The lamb and the beef sandwiches are the renowned dishes but don't forget a nice cake doughnut to top off the meal!
Pastrami and lamb sandwiches are really good. Don't forget their signature hot mustard in the sandwiches !

The French dip of course and the hot mustard . Beef stew taste just like my mom use to make.
The original French Dip ! The au jus makes it, very rich and you can tell its not just beef base and water but rather an authentic stock. Cheap too, only $6 for a beef … (3 of 4 petals via Fondu) Read more
Amazing! The double dipped lamb sandwich is delicious!! Try the pickled eggs they taste delightful and the lemon pie ... I'm speechless! I love it!
Pick a "carver" behind the counter and queue up in front of her until you get your french dip . Cole's also claims invention of french dip sandwiches in 1908, so compare their vastly different styles.
Set up like an old-school cafeteria/diner, Philippe is best known for its "French-dipped" sandwich . The breakfast of choice: cake donuts , along with 10-cent coffee .
Opened 1908 at another location. Historic deli . Also claims to have invented French dip . At this location since 1951.
The Lamb & the Beef Double Dipped are best, with slaw . People wait in line for SO long. Had it once as a kid, didn't remember. Not sure what's with so much hype, all built up! Was such a let down...????
Try the Lamb Sandwich - The famous French dip sandwich was awesome. Don't get squeeze-happy with the mustard sauce though. It has a wasabi-like kick straight into your nasal.
Cheap great sandwiches ! Fast and wonderful service. The chicken mustard is a good combination
Ham sandwich with American cheese single dipped and a side if coleslaw with a lemonade is what I get! Watch out for the mustard !!! Super spicy ! Very good though!
Excellent, This is the original French Dip sandwich , pork and swiss with kosher pickles , my favorite. !04 years in business I have been coming here for 64 years.
I always get the beef dip , macaroni salad , and cherry pie . Sit in the back room and have someone tell you about the collection of street car models.
Ignore Jacqueline, if you get the lamb you are doing it wrong. It's all about the beef .
What an outstanding treasure of Downtown Los Angeles. One of the three essential food establishment to visit while hear - Phillipe's, The Pantry, & Langer's. Suggest the French dip with lemonade
What Katz's pastrami is to NYC, Philippe's French Dip is to L.A., with a similar old-school vibe to boot. Check out the sinus-clearing homemade mustard and take a jar home!
The French dip with beef double dipped ! Also the potato salad is delicious!!!
Excellent food and wonderful historic and relaxing family atmosphere . You step back into history deliciously.
Beef dip (double dipped ), potato salad , cole slaw , chocolate cream pie , baked apple and tons of other items...
One of the Best Childhood memories, been eating here for 56 yrs......still the best! Tried Cole's not even close!
Double dip lamb , beef , or turkey with a heaping amount of hot mustard . The cream of broccoli soup is delicious too.
The pastrami is the best!! The hot mustard is a must. Sandwich and fries will feed two! Amazing place! - Brian Ransom
