It is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the usual venue for the annual Merdeka Parade (National Day Parade).

At the KL city centre is spot (one of the world's tallest flagpole ) that marks where the flag was raised for Malaysia 's independence from British rule. Also a famous venue for special events .
They have free guided walking tours (2 &1/2 hours) on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Starting point at KL City Gallery . Go to visitkl.gov.my for more info.
This is also the #17 stop for the Hop-On Hop-Off bus .. you can also get tickets at the bus stop . The iconic I LOVE KL sign is here also.

Have a stroll at night here.. quite safe and a quite nice night outing with family and friends here.. but it could be quite warm here.. light clothing is recommended..
At the small museum of the City near this square you can see not only old view of the site but also how this place was looking like in times of water flood.

This is a place where Malaysian declared independence from England's dominate,just a grass&land,not wide & beauty than Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi but flagpole is taller.
..'still remember d only malaysian artist arwah dato sudirman haji arshad did his merdeka cncert ovr here!..made his appearance by comin' down frm d tower by rope..till now no artist can beat that'!..
Looks great at night. Although Putrajaya should be the place to hold official events , somehow they always turn back to this area. Causing massive traffic ????
