坎迪伦邦在印尼语中意为“粮仓”，因其建筑群布局形似储存稻谷的仓库而得名。与普兰巴南印度教寺庙群同期建造，但属于大乘佛教寺庙，反映了当时爪哇岛印度教与佛教并存的宗教格局。
