Alice Austen was not your typical Victorian woman . She traveled through NYC taking street photos, was Staten Island’s first female car owner, and lived with another woman for more then fifty years.
A good place to get an idea of what New York was like at the turn of the century, to learn about an extraordinary woman or just to take in the magnificent view of the downtown skyline over the harbor .
Alice Austen lived in this cottage , dubbed “Clear Comfort,” for over 75 years, producing 1000s of photographs . It was first constructed in 1691-1710, and we designated it a landmark in 1971.
This Victorian Gothic cottage was home to photographer and noted badass Alice Austen, who was known for her gritty street photography—and for being the first woman on Staten Island to own a car. Read more
Grounds are beautiful, and the staff is super friendly , dedicated and knowledge in Photography . They run workshops for Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day in April.
