Initially built as a glorious residential house and later the home of a world changing poet, headquarters of several brewing & distilling companies, and now one of the best loved & most charmingly traditional pubs in Edinburgh. If you like loud sports fans , this place is for you. If not, suffering might be worth it as the beer garden is pretty sweet, especially on a rare hot day.

They hold a Pub Quiz every Monday evening. It can be quite tough, but if you have a decent team it's also one of the better, more original ones.

Top Real Ale bar. Many of Edinburgh's brewers drink here, so that's a good recommendation. Usually have an excellent range of Scottish Ales. - John Malone
