A word to the wise: Huy Fong foods is the original Sriracha , Sambal Oelek, and Chili Garlic Sauce company (one brilliant ex-pat Vietnamese). Note the green tops and the rooster - those are Huy Fong's!

One of the few places in Des Moines that carries my favorite Oasis Hummus made by Oasis Falafel out of Iowa City , IA. Their pita chips are pretty awesome too.

Fish Tacos , Fries , burger one of the best. Sashimi and rolls good as is the market lasagne . Olive bar , cheese bar and red velvet cupcakes !

The entire Marie Sharp collection. I run through two bottles of the "Fiery Hot" Habanero hot sauce a year - buying over the Internet (and I live in LA). Spectacular!

Local to the Des Moines area and unlike any other grocery store in Des Moines. They carry locally grown , fresh produce , a wide variety of fine cheeses and wines and groceries from around the world.

South Union bread , great meat counter and coffee selections. Usually good produce, though some specials are not often so great. A good stop for many items, probably won't be your only grocery store .

The wine selection is the best I've found in Iowa. Not limited to French wines by any means!

From the storied manufacturers of Fox's u-bet chocolate syrup - the only way to make a egg cream (look it up) this stuff is addictive!

The only place I have ever seen a vegan Bánh mì and it is amazing. Vegan chili is also the best I've ever had. Non-meat options in general are winners.

Breakfast includes vegan options such as tofu scramble and steel cut oats .

Gateway has the largest cheese selection in Central Iowa. Try all of them! The Fontina is just awesome. Plus they have Dulce De Leche, the unique milk caramel from Argentina.

The tuna sandwich , seared and cooked rare is excellent! Everything at this restaurant is good though!

Great food and great customer service! We wanted some ready to eat watermelon , they didn't had any but gladly cut a whole one for us and packed it!

The food to go single meals are huge portions , good variety, and only $7.99! That's less than most other foods here- a great deal!

High quality local organic grocery store . Way past Whole Foods

I don't eat here nearly as often as I should. I am always surprised by their creative & flavorful menu options!

If you're getting food to go, ask if you can get it in a paper bag. The plastic ones don't hold up very well (we've had more than a couple instances where food ended up all over the car).

Fresh ingredients make an awesome BLT. A little pricey but well worth it!

Their Eggs Benedict (and brunch food in general) is excellent.

A little pricey , but good sustainable groceries , very helpfull employees and the greatest French Toast in Des Moines have made me a regular.

They use wheat and glutin free (corn ) tortillas for their fish and steak tacos . Yum:)

The Memphis Style pulled pork sandwich rules. Who knew cole slaw on pulled pork could be so good?

The floral department has a fantastic selection of air plants!

Took a guest the last Sunday afternoon. He ordered the tenderloin sandwich . He barely could manage cutting the meat with a knife it was so overcooked. All other meals were satisfactory at best.

Try the cranberry walnut salad . There's a reason it's at the top of the list!
