Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva

Wow, wow, wow. A huge basilica (may be the tallest in Rome) that stands in a spacious and somewhat less crowded square. There are some great artwork inside and the colour of the ceiling is lovely!

Christo della Minerva, or Christ the Redeemer, was commissioned in 1514 by Vari to Michelangelo . A black vein was discovered in the marble of the 1st version; finished by apprentices Urbano & Frizzi.

The only truly gothic basilic in the whole Rome. Behind a simple white facade hides a true jewel. High, grey gothic pillars hold a blue ceiling with an impressive colored windows.

The father of modern astronomy Galileo Galilei, after being tried for heresy in the adjoining monastery , abjured his scientific thesis in the church on the 22nd of June 1633

houses the remains of St. Caterina of Siena Fra Angelico. lots of paintings of Filippino Lippi , Raffaellino del Garbo, the Beato Angelico + work of Michelangelo

This is the only gothic church in Rome and features a Michelangelo statue , Christ Bearing the Cross.
