Fascinating and beautiful place missed by most tourists . History right next door to me and I missed it for 7 years! You won't be disappointed by the insights you gain into Lincoln's life.
Highlight: They have a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Honest Abe himself. It's one of only 40-something copies ever made. Don't miss it.
Now a museum , the hilltop mansion was Honest Abe 's summer White House, where he drafted the Emancipation Proclamation and coordinated much of the North’s military deployment during the Civil War .
GREAT tour ! Guide was amazing and full of knowledge about Lincoln, the cottage and the scope of the Civil War as it unfolded during his residency here at the cottage.
I would call in ahead for reservations . Very nice place
Born and raised in D.C., amazed that this historical site passed me by. See the movie Lincoln!!!
Dissapointing: An empty reconstructed house, no details or features of historic interest. Some audio recordings. Why would anyone pay 15$ for this, if you can read the same information on Wikipedia.
In the summer of 1862, Lincoln wrote his second draft of the Emancipation Proclamation . The cottage was built in 1842-43, according to the plans of John Skirving.
Interesting tour —I learned a lot about Lincoln. But the cottage itself is very plain.
It's inside some federal property. I can't get it because I didn't bring the drivers license.
Museum portion is free. Cottage tours are $15.
