Il Castello Estense sorse nel 1385 come strumento di controllo politico e militare. Sorse intorno alla Torre dei Leoni, un'antica torre di avvistamento già esistente nel XIII secolo ed inserita lungo la cinta muraria che allora delimitava la città verso nord.
