The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored.
Be sure to schedule a tour through the office of your representative. You get to skip the lines and get a customized tour with an intern, who may one day be your Senator!
Free tours that leave quite often. If its high season, try to reserve online beforehand. The tour is about 40 mins and 100% worth it.
The bathrooms on the 2nd floor by the vending machines are the best for taking a #2

Make sure that you go to the viewing galleries in smaller groups of people on your same time schedule. You must leave the gallery with all of your group.
Also, just like at the airport , security will not allow you to bring your own beverages. So hydrate in advance!
Each state has two statues of famous residents on display throughout the Capitol -- try to find the two from your state !

Instead of avoiding the Capitol when there's a security threat (really, how are you going to know this before hand?), try to not BE the security threat . I.e. No prohibited items..they're posted online
