If it's possible to think a cemetery is cool than this one is the coolest. The Phantom Tours offers a tour around this cemetery and it's worth taking. I learned so much and would do it again.
Buy water from the guy at the gate, you're gonna need it. Wear a hat. Beautiful cemetery , watch out for the faux Laveau. Only way to visit is with a tour they fill up fast look for Save Our Cemeteries
You can only go with a tour , but it's well worth it! The stories you will hear are extremely interesting and you can impress your friends with them - like where will Nicholas Cage be burried!
Very eerie feeling while inside the cemetery . You can only get into the cemetery while on a tour - it's not open to the general public.
There are tour guides that collect outside the cemetery every half hour or so, or you can walk down the block to the Basin St Station & book a private guide for your group. A fantastic sight!
Unless you fam, Cemetery Tours NOLA is the only way you can gain entry into St. Louis Cemetery No.1. Tours set out 7 days/wk from 9am-3:45pm at Basin St Station
Try and get a tour from Save Our Cemeteries at the Basin St. Station. Visit the REAL tomb of the voodo queen, not the one marked in x and see Nicolas Cage 's giant pyramid.
If you're going to visit, it's worth the $20 per person for a tour by the Save Our Cemeteries organization . You'll learn things you wouldn't otherwise and support the preservation of the cemeteries .
You can't get in without a tour guide . Take a tour with Save Our Cemeteries - it's a nonprofit that works on restoring the cemetery !
Bought the 3-1 witches brew tour for $12 a person and was pleasantly surprised. Cindy was a great guide. Interesting history.
Do the Save Our Cemeteries guided tour ($20) or buy their excellent guide ($5) and support preservation of this place. Marie Laveau is said to be buried here. A magnetic place. I felt safe.
It's sad that you need a tour guide to get in now thanks to people desecrating the tombs . Still worth it but you do not get to see the full cemetery now. Glad I was there last October.
A paid tour is needed to see the cemetery . Cemetery No. 2, a short distance away, is free for people to wander through.
A famous NOLA oddity--the above ground burial plot. STL #1 is the oldest of the three here, and is rumoured to be where Nicholas Cage will be buried upon his demise.
One of the amazing cemeteries to visit when you're in NOLA. The acid trip scene in Easy Rider was filmed here.
I believe that Ernie K Doe is buried near the left rear of the graveyard along with my friend and neighbor Lloyd Sensat in Anna Ross Twitchell's tomb of elegance. She shares with only the best!!!
Timeless and beautiful. Get Ernie to bring you out here for some good education on this one
No trip is complete without Congo Square Preservation Society and St. Louis Cemetery #1 with The Divine Prince, Congo Square Elegun and Guardian of the Flame Maroon Society Voodoo Chief
It is a must visit for history in New Orleans with Marie LeVeau and other notables filling these historic landmark vaults. Just cruise through the alley ways and picture the landed notables of city !
Although a cemetery , this place is truly a unique site. Above ground mausoleums everywhere. It is gothic with a feeling of voodoo in the air.
French Quarter Phantoms offers a tour of the cemetery leaving from CC's on Decatur Street @ 11 am each day except 10 am on Sundays! A great value and a great time!
A must see on your trip!!!! Check out Nicolas Cage 's horrible addition to this beautiful place.
Go pay homage to Homer Plessy, plaintiff in the US Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson. There are a number of other interesting tombs as well .
The lost souls of Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider dropped some acid and encountered a few ghosts of their own in this New Orleans cemetery that's also home to the bones of Voodoo queen Marie Laveau . Read more
Take a walking tour from French quarter, not the ones offered at the entrance. You will get a lot more interesting info about the city
Oldest cemetery that is still in existence in the city . People buried their dead just outside of the Quarter for fear of Yellow Fever, which was rampant in the 18th century.
Is not possible to visit it in a rush. I understand faster is the guide more he/she earns but not this way.
Jeffrey at Strange True Tours is a really interesting guide!!! Love his behind the scenes tour of the cemetery !
Definitely take the tour and visit Marie Laveau’s final resting place.
On Sunday you may get a personal your by the grace keeper. Please tip him well . He is very knowledgeable of the place
Visit Marie Laveau's grave.. the one with tons of XXX marks that people have drawn for luck. H. Plessy (Plessy vs. Ferguson) is also here. Court case resulted in separate but equal segregation laws.
Great cemetary to sightsee at, but I wouldn't suggest going alone, as there are homeless people and vagrants drifting about. Be sure to check out Marie Laveau's tomb , which is right by the entrance.
Persons marking on tombs , or any other edifice within the historic New Orleans cemeteries , may be subject to police action.
Leaving offerings at voodoo queen Marie Laveau’s tomb , located in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 (Basin St., between Conti and St. Louis streets).
Apparently they shut it down at noon on Martin Luther King day. I found this out at about 11:55a when they said, 'Last call! Locking the gate!', with no prior warnings. Its a very interesting walk.
See where a voodoo preistess is buried. You can also see where Nicholas Cages future resting place
Founded in 1789, the cemetery is the oldest in the city ; among those believed to be interred here is the Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau.
I had so many misconceptions. I learned a lot! You need a tour guide .
Take the tour . Interesting information and worth it!
Very cool, somewhat spooky cemetery . Be careful though, it's in a shady part of town and located right next to the projects.
A must see!!! I mean it.
Worth it. Great history and feel for city
You can mistake 3 different gravesites as Marie Laveau's, but there's only one with a "proper" plaque . Who knows which one is the right one.
Marie laveau had a daughter whose tomb is there too...also covered with xxx. Pretty cool place to see even without a tour . Closes at 3pm though!
Look for the voodoo queen, Marie Laveau! You have to!
View from within
Starting March 2015, you'll have to get on a walking tour to get inside and see around.
Nic Cage has a spot here. See the voo doo queen. Fascinating!
Great tour knowledgeable guide.
Save our cemeteries tour only $10. Its only on certain days if the week. Go to the visitor center and ask. Nicholas Cage 's final resting place is here too
Look for the tomb covered in XXX's close to the entrance. (There's another one towards the back - that's not it.) - foodforfel
Just ridiculous. Make sure you ask for the story behind this. - Steph Schneider
