HISTORY

Fort Point was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1853 and 1861 to prevent entrance of a hostile fleet into San Francisco Bay and was occupied in WWII in order to protect the Bay .

Joanne

Absolutely beautiful place to be right under the Golden Gate Bridge . Great place to take a lot of great photos as well . Make sure you wear a jacket when you head upstairs (best not to wear a dress ).

SFist

Fort Point was ostensibly built to protect SF from Confederate attack. Few places are more thrilling to kids than abandoned military forts. They're dark, spooky, and perfect for hide and seek. Read more

Bundle up! It gets cold and windy inside the arena-like fort. Also, make sure to peer through all the tiny windows for spectacular and rare views of the GGB.

Make it in to see the fort, it's epic and almost unknown how much history they have stored up in there. Plus a cool view of the city toward North Beach & the bridge . Tap you hands at the runners mark.

Rob Ray

If you can get a BBQ on a sunny day with little wind, you've found a little slice of heaven. Sit back and enjoy the view of the bridge !

Kim Serritslev

Fantastic place. Great view to the bridge and interesting stories regarding Fort Point

Exploratorium

Notice the greenish rock near the entrance. This is serpentinite—California’s state rock—which likely came from deep within the earth’s interior. This rock holds up the south tower of the GG Bridge .

Jess L

I love going up to the roof under the bridge and enjoying the view .

From the right side of the parking area, there is a great vantage of the Golden Gate Bridge . Get low and try to capture one of the rusty chains in the foreground with the bridge in the background.

David Sanger

This Civil War fort offers a unique view from directly underneath the bridge . The intricate girders contrast with the historic brickwork. Shoot in the late afternoon from the top level.
