戦国武将・高山右近は、徳川幕府の基督教禁教令により1614年、長崎からフィリピンへと渡る。12月にルソン島 に到着した右近は地元から盛大な歓迎を受けた。しかし、フィリピン到着後すぐに熱病にかかり翌年１月その生涯を閉じる。日比友好の証として、右近が日本人居留地としたプラザデラオに彼の像と墓が建てられた。
