It was a unique experience, not as cool as watching a bat colony's egress though. The hill on the south side is ideal for viewing but bring some snacks and drinks.
~30 minutes before sunset during the month of September (and some of October) you can come see the Swifts converge before diving into a chimney . Earlier in the month the crowds are smaller.
It’s a wonderful experience to watch the swifts roost in September. Enjoy as the crowd “oohs” and “ahhs” together.
The swifts emerge on their own schedule. Bring some hillsliding cardboard, a soccer ball and your youthful sense of adventure.
Every day is not the dramatic "swoop" as the website indictes, but it is still fascinating to watch. Especially when a hawk is in the midst.
See the whole story including inside the chimney in the documentary On The Wing. Swiftsmovie.com.
Watch the Swifts gather around dusk. Bring a blanket and lie back.
Bring some snacks , and a blanket to sit on.
It was life changing.
