かつては磯で二つの岩がありその形が歓喜天に似ていたところからその別称である聖天にちなんで聖天島と呼ばれ関東大震災により海底が隆起して地続きとなり湘南港が造られた際に海が埋め立てられて現在の形となる現在も岩肌の上部が残っており当時の島の様子がうかがえます。その昔、八坂神社の江の島天王祭の際に禊が行われる神聖な場所でもあったため、公園内には社があり鎌倉時代の僧・良真上人の像が安置されています。 - TT _Taka
