Bear Mountain State Park is a state or provincial park Bear Mountain located in United States.
Palisades Interstate Pkwy Bear Mountain , NY 10911 United States
If you can hike (rather than drive) to the top of Bear Mountain, definitely go for it! Take the Appalachian Trail . It's a very steep climb , but worth the view ! Great workout!
Lots of great hiking and picnic areas . If you're meeting friends, make plans to meet at a specific point. Very little/no cell service once you drive into the park .
Some parts are more steep than others if you are hiking the trail up so make sure to have on hiking shoes and bring about 3-4 bottles of water. Worth the climb and workout! Beautiful views !
Gorgeous park . If you do the hike up to the summit, beware: there are A LOT of steps, some of them very steep.
Pro tip- if the road to the park is backed up, drive another 1/4 mile and there is an entrance to another lot on your left. It leads down to the zoo and there is a pretty trail back to the park
Bear Mountain is the ideal place for adults and children to enjoy the outdoors with hiking trails scenic paths. The park is the ideal location to experience changing seasons in Westchester County .
Started out w/ a drive to the Tower bc we were confused on where the trails began. We ended up parking near the inn & took the Appalachian trail that took us right back up w/ stairs. Good for legs!!
When hiking the major welch trail from hessian lake , keep an eye on the trail markers else be lost in the woods, trudging through piles of autumn leaves.
This is not my favorite hike in the NY area. Be warned, some of the hikes are a little challenging for beginners with steep rocks to climb . Also half of the hike is nothing but stairs.
1 hour drive from Manhattan. Absolutely awesome views and trails . On a good day you can see NYC from the top.
Rigorous hike with spectacular views . Plenty of off-trail climbing opportunities. In the winter, the steps can be extremely icy.
It looked something out of a postcard. But I recommend going with friends because it's so much enjoyable that way! I, now, more than ever plan on hiking again with friends pretty soon :)
Instead of driving to the top, hike/rock climb one of the two trails that lead there from the main parking area. Neither is easy, but it makes the view so much better! :)

Beautiful when the leaves change color during the fall. Great Oktoberfest event but don't go during the last two weeks. Mad packed.
Bear mountain has a parking lot at the top. If you want a hike that makes you feel successful, hike up bald mountain .
50 mile bike ride from central park . go there and back if you're ambitious, or take metro-north home from across the river .
The Major Welch trail is a much more challenging climb than the Appalachian Trail . Scrambling up rock outcroppings vs stairs. I wouldn't call either easy.
I've been here a few times as a kid and as an adult. Our family had birthday parties here, swam at the pool, and even took the ferry here.
Beautiful park . I highly recommend the section of the Appalachian Trail that runs through the park as an introduction to the trail .
take the pedestrian underpass from hessian lake picnic area to the pool and zoo
Scenic views , beautiful nature trails , and plenty of open space to relax. Well worth the drive from NYC.
There are two hikes from the trail head at the Inn . We went up the Appalachian Trail up to the tower and down. Moderate-easy hike . Very congested.
Beautiful park with lots to explore, but it is a crowded parking lot come summer weekends. Arrive early.
Spend the day in your hiking boots on the Appalachian Trail as it crosses the summits of Bear and West Mountains , then circle back on the SB Yellow blaze trail . 9.7 miles and worth the solitude.
A very challenging bike ride . Also a great place to chill with family.
As far from it all as you can get without leaving Rockland. Includes a pool, a zoo , nature museums , paddle boats , kids’ carousel and hiking trails , plus ice skating in winter. Read more
Hear a siren? It is probably a test of the "Indian Point [Nuclear] Energy Center". See park noticeboards for details.
Beautiful views , but the trails get pretty crowded on the weekend
Fun place, lots to do. Bring your own food. My boys love going. The bathrooms need some renovations they are pretty gross especially the ones by the pool.
A quick drive up from NYC- beautiful views and lots of trails for hiking .
There are plenty of great hiking options in this area. Most with awesome views .
Really nice park , great hikes , perfect to go with your kids.
Drive up to Perkins for free parking during non winter months.
I've been here many of times and it never gets old. Plenty of fresh air , swimming , and don't forget the beach .
Great place to visit. Historic, awesome views of the Tidal River (Hudson), and educational .
It's beautiful. Love the trails , the views
Scenic views are wonderful. Bring your family for a relaxing picnic .
Something here for everyone, every season. Thse zoo , the climb up, winter skating , kite flying..
place is great. but bring your own stein (they ran out at noon), and bring your own food to eat outside the tent, or eat before. there was an hour long line waiting for the only on site food source.
The hiking routes are confusing but you will figure it out ????
Incredible view ????????! Can't describe it!
Beautiful park with plenty of swimming , hiking and even a zoo
Foliage is gorgeous
Driving up top is cheating. Octoberfest would benefit from more German and more craft beer
Love the place but beware, if you want to hike you better bring a bottle of water or something because there is a lot of rocky paths and hills . There was nothing at Doodle town so don't expect much.
Kick ass place for family camping and riding your sports bike be careful of the asshole cops that have nothing to do but eat donuts
Take a drive up Perkins Memorial drive to the tower and a great view over the Hudson.
don’t drive up the trail next to this sign; it is just a footpath.
Hikes are preety good but too many people, especially on the Bear mountain.
So fun and definitely worth bringing your dog along for the hike. They'll love the rock scrambling bits. - Josh Mateo
Zoo opens at 10am. Many rescued animals. Can get through quickly and exhibits are old school and great. - Andrew Miller
Great place for a bike ride, the lake is 3 miles around! - Jimmy
Absolutely gorgeous, great trails for hiking and camping is great. - Ayesha Rehman
Numerous entrances and viewpoints, most of the trails are easy to moderate. Make sure to bring enough water as well as hiking sticks - Jon
