Coastal Florida was a major field of conflict as European nations fought for control in the New World. As part of this struggle, Fort Matanzas guarded St. Augustine’s southern river approach.

One of my favorite places and things to do in St Augustine. Worth the visit
One of the best tour sites around St. Augustine! Boats leave on the half hour. FREE!
Something great and free that the whole family can enjoy. Great pictures can be taken on the beach to get onto the ferry and from the grassy areas surrounding the fort.
Very worth the trek out of the tourist zone. Free ferry ride , very relaxing. Saw dolphins!
Not the large fort in St Augustine but, it was free! Cool little fort and the Matanzas river is beautiful!
A lot of great history...and it's FREE!
Awesome free national park ... donate some $ in the visitors center & enjoy learning about a national treasure ... History dating back to the beginning of America
This a interesting and easy national park to get to.
Ferry leaves on the bottom of the hour. Do the nature trail (10-15 min) to kill time.
Probably the prettiest place I visited in all of the St Augustine area.
Climb the ladder up to the roof. It's a great view !
Its free and a great piece of history
Small, but interesting, worth a quick visit.
Spectacular views with a nice ocean breeze .
Be sure to take the ferry ride across the inlet.
See the horned grey owls. Worth the stop.
Free ferry ride to Fort Matanzas , built by the Spanish in the 1700s
It feels secluded, the gardens are beautiful and the view of the ocean and coquina rocks is refreshing. - Mary Dowd
Try to snag the guide for info about wildlife... It seems that people have sticky fingers so these are scarce. - Chad Carino
Definitely do the Dark of the Moon Tour. They give you a tour tell you the hotspots then let you go free to roam. Also the 5$ EMF rental is worth it. Very fun tour. Worth the price. Bring water! - Diana Lindloff
Really like this beach. It's a bit more relaxed than the St. Aug beach with fewer people. My dog and I had a blast! A warning though-they are VERY strict with leash laws here. - Amanda C.
