If you're going on a sunny day, go in the afternoon. The sun will be facing the houses which makes their colors more pretty.

Very anticlimactic... The park is being renovated, so there are so many tourists trying to get their picture in!!! Plus the bright colour of the houses are not as pronounced as thought
You need to walk up the hill in the park to get a good view . So many tourists just check then out from the sidewalk on Steiner.
Beautiful area. Walk through it so that you can see how the architecture changes from street to street.

Famous painted ladies are across from Alamo Square. If you want to take a picture, take it across the street at the top of the hill . If not, driving by is also nice.
Parking around the park can be a challenge, but worth the sight and overall time at the park .
If you stand on the Hayes St. side of Alamo Square, you'll have the best view of The Painted Ladies (Full House houses), St. Mary's Cathedral , the Transamerica building & the rest of downtown SF. ;)

Grab some ice cream on divis and come to Alamo square to eat it and hang out!
The park is currently under construction , so there isnt a great view of the ladies from the park

Take photos from an angle ... and then climb the hill to get the view of San Francisco in the background
Go at sunset , when the light hits them just right
Note that the park will be closed until 2017. You can still see the painted ladies but not from the same viewpoint as full house!
For best results, capture your photos in the afternoon before other buildings cast shadows.
Don't miss this sight. When I was there, a lady was being refurbished, hopefully you'll get the view of them all!
If you go high enough on the hill you can get a good view of SF in the background.

World Famous Houses, painted in different colors. Try to take some fotos during sunrise or sunset ... Fantastic!
The tour is well worth it. They did a great job with the electronic tourist guides. Go early to avoid lines, buy tickets prior to departure day to avoid lines. - Angelos N
