A lovely spot to contemplate how lucky Kalapana really is: unlike Mount St Helens or the fury of Mt. Vesuvius, our town is no Pompeii of the Pacific. Sad to see her gone, better to see her now rebuilt
Bring strong flashlights to hike the trail @night. Lava when we went was from Oct 2009 so there are still warm parts and a 300 degree vent.
15 minute walk for viewing . Rather eerie when you consider an entire town is under the lava bed.
Even if u don't see moving lava, worth the trail walking to walk over the cooled lava (day or night).
They have blocked off the road not to far into the lava flow because the lava went over it July 16th 2010 and were not allowed to walk on the old flow because its private property, I guess there has

Just driving along the road with lava-rocked land..was surreal.
It's worth getting a guide to hike out to the flow area... you can get very close and see some amazing views... wear sturdy shoes! - Kirsten S
