Until 2001 the store was known as Heelas, in line with John Lewis ' policy of allowing regional branches to keep their original names. The Heelas name can still be seen in brickwork on Chain Street.
Heelas first opened in Reading in 1854 as a drapers and linen shop. It did not become a fully fledged department store until 1877. The John Lewis Partnership bought the store in 1953.
John Lewis Reading supplies household and other goods to Her Majesty the Queen (presumably for the nearby Windsor Castle ). As such the branch holds a Royal Warrant.
Always a fantastic store and they always honour "price match" my first stop always for electrical goods
Never had a problem with service here. I've had to return faulty items twice and have always received the best service.
Quality of goods are excellent. Staff in home department are not friendly . Example; there is no hello, how can I help, any thing else you need, good bye etc. Not even a smile. Makes me uncomfortable

Audios and electrical are no longer in the basement . The hair and beauty salon has returned after 40 years.

Staff are friendly and not pushy. Great service.
The audio & TV department in the front basement used to be a hair salon - there are still tiles and the remains of old basins behind some of the fixtures.
On the contrary my experience with electricals here - over - the years has been good.

Usually a really busy store. Often if you need a Genius Bar appointment quickly it's better to head to the nearby Apple Store in Basingstoke. - Richard Peat
