A wonderful place to roam when time and weather permits. Excellent for people who aren’t keen to hiking as most of the island is flat.

On Shelter Island, the Nature Conservancy 's preserve offers hiking trails through various ecosystems and past kettle holes formed by glaciers during the Ice Age.
Beautiful wknd here 9/11-9/12 with YPG. Helped collect seed in the grasslands and clams from the creek. Fun way to contribute to TNC ongoing restoration projects. Love staying at the Manor House!
Very good hiking trails . Well marked and well maintained. Be sure to bring insect repellent.
Spent an amazing weekend here Sept 11-12. We went seining with Conservancy staff and pulled in a mullet , striped bass , glassnose skates , and tons of crabs !

Since 1980, over 200 species of birds, including 79 nesting species, have been recorded at Mashomack Preserve.
Great place to visit off season. Vineyards, outlets and restaurants on way out. Nice places like Chequit to eat on island. - J Day
