Heaven on earth for readers. Daily book readings and book signing occasions. Lots of signed books & huge selection of books . Downstairs discount section was amazing. Very well curated music section!
Amazing selection of books ! If you've run out of things to read, this is definitely the place to discover great books . Highly recommend the author events .
At twenty-five years old this is the grand dame of independent book stores in DC. Their selection is unmatched and the caliber of author readings beats any national chain. Read more
Great little coffee/tea and bookstore a few blocks north of UDC. Will probably make a stroll back her when the weather is nicer. Nothing modern and chain like here!
Number 1 bookstore in dC , with a cute cafe ; ginger lemonade is my favourite choice!
DC's best bookstore for bibliophiles. This is the shop you see so often on CSPAN Book TV . Awesome indie selection, great staff , curated book groups, very nice coffeehouse downstairs -- but not cheap .
Politics & Prose caters to a well-read and politically savvy clientele. The cozy basement cafe serves coffee , drinks, sandwiches , salads and a vegan soup of the day. -- Green Guide Editor
Not to be missed at the cafe : the homemade toast with jam . It's homemade and from Lyon bakery in D.C. It's literally the best I've ever tasted.
The staff’s knowledge and love of their books is the best around.
Great author talks, but also great when not crowded and you can just sit and tap away on your laptop.
Many of the author events are recorded for their podcast - tune in to Bruce Bartlett from January 2018 https://politicsprose.podbean.com/e/bruce-bartlett-live-at-politics-and-prose/
My favorite local book store , try the London Fog drink at the cafe instead of a regular latte
Amazing book selection and ambiance, as well as wonderful events . I ment Rick Riordan here.
Such an amazing book store in DC- you must go there while in town if you haven't been before!
There food is good but I'm usually there for the prize. The books !!! They always have a new book I discover.
Nice, but Internet is cut off during lunch time which staff said is between 11am and 3pm. I guess this frees up tables for customers buying food and not just sipping and surfing . A bit inconvenient.
Great coffee shop downstairs. Interesting selection of books throughout.
Love this place but was annoyed the cashier rang up my order for 2 books for a book event so that it cost me MORE than it would have if I had only purchased each book individually
Not only is the children's section well-stocked but every spring the bookstore raises caterpillars into butterflies that the young readers help release. -- Green Guide Editor
Absolutely love this bookstore , and they are always hosting interesting talks. The coffee is pretty decent too.
They have ARCs that they give away regularly. Their author signing events are great!
Cute café in the back to enjoy your newly purchased book ! Super adorable!
Why won't they rent me space for an apartment ? I don't need much room. One of the discount rooms will do, or the alcove where the travel books are. I won't bother the customers. I'll just be reading.
Order the Peppermint Tea and you'll get a huge cup of hot, tasty tea . Very good for an early morning walk and read!
Great selection of books on every subject and genre.
Cute cafe in the back to read the books you just bought! Love it!
Sale books are downstairs! They always have a great selection. If for some reason they don't have a book they'll order it for you. :-)

Fantastic in-depth graphic novel section and love sneaking downstairs to kids' section to hide in kid cave and read YA literature. Also best author readings in town . Read more
Pricey ! But the discount section is a great one. Great titles in hard cover for between 8 and 10 dollars.
The staff are all GREAT curators--definitely browse the staff picks!
Perhaps the most literary bookstore in DC . Something has clearly changed here.
Soup of the day is always vegan and always delicious.
enjoy a cup of coffee at the cafe downstairs and take your eyes off the clock for a bit.
Don't forget about Open Mic in the morning Friday nights!
The events and staff are always fantastic!
Good latte and chocolate chip scone .
Amazing open face sandwitches
Go downstairs to the room across from the children's section--best discount book selection ever!

Second Story Books offers a vast selection of used, rare, and out-of-print books. Well-organized inventory make it a go-to destination for book collectors and literature enthusiasts. - Bettie Perry
A very cool place to simply chill-lax. Best place to hang is in the bar area. The night I wS there it was jammed packed so we got a table and shared a peach cobbler dessert and coffee w/booze - Mikael Wagner
Wonderful bookstore with plenty of charm. Smells like old books and glue with things in every nook and cranny. Has its own organization but might take a couple visits to appreciate it. - Stephanie H.
Really cool, chill place. As a Texan expat, I was delighted to see they had Shiner, but definitely take advantage of the great local brew. - Kayle Barnes
Everything on the menu is delicious. Make sure to get a side of spicy mayo & save room for dessert! - Gabbi Baker
