I love this place! It’s brilliant that there is an opportunity to look through the 12-inch Zeiss telescope most evenings depending upon the weather. A great location with good views of LA too.

Amazing trails up to and around the observatory . It gets very busy on weekends and bank holidays though, so it can be difficult to find a parking space . Some parkings in the park shut at sunset .

HISTORY

In 1896, Col. Griffith J. Griffith gave funds in his will to build an observatory , exhibit hall, and planetarium on this donated land. Construction began in 1933 and opened to the public in 1935.

The Observatory originally opened to the public in 1935, and was reopened in 2006 after renovations. It's a great place to take in the view or snap a photo in front of the Hollywood sign .

Parking 's a pain in the ass, if you can, take a bus over and walk up otherwise come early. Definitely see the sunset and the shows in the planetarium are absolutely breathtaking, really cheap too!

You should first check the show times then go around the place. Tip: Is it a summer weekend afternoon? Little/no chance to park your car in the main parking lot .
