横浜駅西口の新名所とするため、横浜岡田屋開店記念のひとつとして1968年（昭和43年）11月27日に誕生。 誕生から22年と半年後の1991年（平成3年）5月、東急ホテル 側通路から現在の正面玄関へ移設された。
マドロスとは「水兵」、「船乗り」のことだって。横浜らしいね。
