Burnside Bridge is a historic and protected site Sharpsburg located in United States.
Antietam National Battlefield Sharpsburg , MD 21782 United States
Part of the Antietam Battlefield experience. Take time to walk across the bridge and enjoy the area. A very beautiful place to enjoy.
Make sure to walk the trails for a nice workout and a peaceful time as the woods are away from the roads . Lots of people walk their dogs or go for runs there.
"One mile below Sharpsburg on Antietam Creek, a stone structure , known as the Burnside Bridge, crosses the stream...broken here and there by tiny cascades, hurries down to the Potomac."
"...our own dead carefully interred in groups...The stone wall...is the only monument of many gallant men who sleep in the meadow at its side." pic: modest graves of Union soldiers along fence line .
Great history lesson and the strategic issues at this bridge are pretty obvious
An interesting site to visit on a trip.
"It was at this point that some of the most desperate fighting of the battle of Antietam occurred...General Burnside , commanding the Ninth Corps, was ordered to carry this point."
