I hadn’t been since I was a kid, and it was nice to take a day and experience it again as an adult interested in this part of history. See the church , Bloody Lane and Burnside’s Bridge .
Bug spray is a must!!! Even just walking near the church we were constantly swatting bugs away. Kids 6+ yrs old might like asking questions to people in historical clothing near the church .
This is one of America's best remembered battlefields . Take the driving tour and follow the map and you will find the three parts of the day of battle here very easy to understand.
The museum opens at 9am and it shows a wonderful film that gives a visitor more perspective on the battle and the sites to see during once's stay at the battlefield . A must-see for visitors.
Like Gettysburg, if you really spend some time you will see why it was such a strategic battle with long lasting implications for both sides. The creeks rivers and cornfields played a big role in it

A fascinating historical site , but also a great opportunity for photography . There are a lot of monuments on the battlefield and reenactments are performed regularly.
It will take all day to properly do this, but once you have you will have an amazing understanding of this battle and of its importance
We shot engagement photos here. Gorgeous views . Take your dog for a walk here on a fall day.
an incredible experience to try to get a sense of the bloodshed that occurred here. You can't even begin to describe the feeling you get walking on the battlefield
McClellan and myself are to be photographed tomorrow by Mr. Gardner if we can sit still long enough. Gen. M should have no problem, but I may sway in the breeze a bit. Lincoln to his wife on 10/2/1862
"...located on a ridge near Sharpsburg, on the battle-field of Antietam , the slaughter here was fearful. It was against this point that Gen. Hooker made his assaults and where he received his wound."
Very historic site ! Pretty cool if you're into history!
"One mile below Sharpsburg on Antietam Creek , a stone structure , known as the Burnside Bridge , crosses the stream...broken here and there by tiny cascades, hurries down to the Potomac."
Lincoln was "met by General McClellan and Staff , who conducted him...over the scenes of the recent battle , and in reviewing the various Corps and Divisions of the Army" over October 3-4, 1862.
Definately used prior and bring all for the day...BUG SPRAY!!!!!!! It is a must-have especially in the hot, humid months!
Excellent tour guide. He was very passionate, knowledgable and informative. Highly recommend the visit.
"...the dead and wounded on the field here presented seemed countless. The Confederates were buried where they fell, our own dead carefully interred in groups." of the assault on Burnside's Bridge .

If you go in December for the Memorial Illumination don't go too late...it's 1 AM and more than half the candles/lights are out. Disappointing :(
Creepy in the early morning when the fog is lifting.
