This park exists bc of Walt Whitman's efforts to create a natural oasis inside the city . The big trees you see were here before the revolutionary war.
Memorial to US soldiers that died on prison ships in Wallabout Bay during the Revolution. The 1st tomb was on Hudson Ave but a 2nd memorial was built in Fort Greene Park by McKim, Mead & White in 1905
12,000 American civilians died on the British prison ships, due to the poor hygiene conditions. 2x as many civilians died as soldiers . Whitman writes abt the bones washing up alongside the waterfront
Someone needs to fix the lights at the top of the monument .
Catch glimpses of the downtown & midtown skylines from the base of the monument..incl WTC site & Empire St bldg
