Opened in 1829 as part of a controversial movement to change the behavior of inmates through "confinement in solitude with labor," Eastern State Penitentiary quickly became one of the most expensive and most copied buildings in the young United States.

I can't believe I almost left Philly without doing this! Its a cool place with a lot of history. The guided tour is the same price as regular entry. Take the tour and explore on your own afterward.
It’s said that lingering spirits still haunt the cells of this National Historic Landmark in Philadelphia. Make your way through one of America’s most haunted prisons for a chilling experience!
An eerily beautiful place. Did the audio tour narrated by Steve Buscemi and it was nice being able to explore at my own pace. Take plenty of photos and dress warmly in winter months.
I have never been to a prison and it visit to Eastern State Penitentiary will stay in my mind for a long time. The audio guide tour is very informative and fun at the same time.
H-h-holy crap. This place is absolutely amazing. Can't come to Philadelphia and not visit this place. Take your time on the tour . Plenty to see, although after a while, all the cells look the same.
I had a daytime audio tour , and it was amazing! I've really learnt a lot of interesting stuff about the prison . Highly recommend visiting this place if you are in Philly area.
It's amazing and even a little bit scary. I recommend getting the guided visit, since the guide discusses a lot of interesting points about penitentiary systems in general.
Take the audio tour narrated by Steve Buscemi, but don't forget to explore on your own for Capone's cell, the story of the breakout, and stories of the women who were there. So awesome.
Highly recommended! Audio guide is great - loved Steve Buscemi's voice guiding me! Al Capone's cell is very interesting, as the stories of old prisoners . Warning - is *very* cold in the winter!
Fantastic museum combining art installations and historical information. Explore most of the facility on your own, with an audio guide you can use for as much or as little as you like.
If you tour during a cold day, dress warmly (scarf , gloves). The prison is a giant freezer in winter but it's still worth the visit. Charles Dickens wanted to visit two places in America: This was one
One of the best things we did in Philadelphia. Fantastic day out and the audio guide by Steve Buschemi is a really nice touch!
Awesome historic prison in the middle of the city . Great history and place to spend a couple hours and view the prison grounds.
You know when you wish you could do something for the first time again? I absolutely loved the audio tour .
If you're visiting Philadelphia for the first time, this is a fantastic local landmark that often gets overlooked. There's a ton of history behind these creepy walls
For a better experience research ESP history before you visit so you can better digest everything you learn while you are there :)

This is a great place to tour . The history is amazing and it’s interesting to learn about how they treated Al Capone vs the others. Chris Vtrainers Personal Training
Awesome you must get the quick pass so ur not standing on line . Great scare and alot of fun. Staff is great and its worth the trip
Very interesting museum and definitely worth a visit - didn't realise that Al Capone was a resident here for a short while.
A must see to Philly!Take the audio tour and have at least an extra 2 hours to visit every corner. It's well worth it.
Just keep in mind that they are actors and you'll be fine. After every scream, comes a laugh! Rip off that necklace as soon as you get scared and swat the scary monsters with it!! It's fun
Great creepy place to explore the early history of America... even if it's about crime and punishment. Best at night, especially on a ghost tour . Just be sure to dress appropriately. :-)
All active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and their families can enjoy free admission from Memorial Day through Labor Day.thanks to the Blue Star Museum program!
This was an excellent museum , the nightly haunted house worried me it would be more tourist trap than historical but during the day it's legitimate. The frozen in time state of decay is beautiful
Great audio tour with the option to explore the nooks and crannies on your own. Need to go a couple times to take it all in.
My first visit to the Penitentiary. We were here for the Bastille Day Celebration. The free reenactment of the revolution was highly amusing. I would recommend it to anyone.
Whether you go with a group, or a self guided tour , make sure you grab a map so you don't miss out on any of the historic exhibits like Al Capone's cell!
Take a guided tour if possible. It doesn't cost extra and it was really interesting and well don
Amazing stories happened there. ... I was able to take crazy photos in there. ... Definitely worth visiting
Interesting audio and walk around tour . Wish they had a night scare tour that would scare the pants off of everyone
Seriously bad a**! My hubby and I LOVED it!! Great guide-led tour and I heard from other ppl the Audio tour was awesome too! Worth your time!
The whole theme is awesome, you really have fun there, although they should have more stuff to sell at the store, better souvenirs
Looooved it! Highly recommended; Buy VIP passes to by-pass all the lines . And when they ask you if you wanna be touched, say yes, otherwise it's no fun!!
The first penitentiary in the US with a super interesting history. The audio tour is high quality stuff.
Find the anything-but-ordinary former prison cell of mobster, Al Capone. Some believe he was haunted by a ghost during his time at the prison . As seen on Travel Channel’s Mysteries at the Museum .
The coolest! They have a Halloween special that makes the prison haunted for the audience
Great mix of exploring on your own, guided tours , and audio tours . You can spend hours in here
Inmates of the former prison attempted to dig their way to freedom and visitors can see the primitively-crafted tunnel . Was their plan a success? As seen on Travel Channel’s Mysteries at the Museum .
Audio guide is very informative. The building should be equipped with heating for better experience.
Great place for photographers - lots of fabulous peeling paint and texture; tons of history. And do pay the tripod fee. It's worth it for those darker areas.
Bastille Day re-enactment of the Storming of the Bastille every year around Bastille Day is a real hoot! They let you eat cake by through thousands of TastyKakes from the walls onto the crowd below.
FANTASTIC museum . So worth the trip. Street parking is free
Eastern State Penitentiary, a grim, 172-year-old former state prison , was once home to famous inmates Al Capone and Willie Sutton. Pained former prisoners are said to haunt Eastern State’s dark halls
If there's a long line , you can buy tickets online faster than you waiting in line .
For food, walk down Fairmount Avenue for lots of places. Fairmount Pizza is definitely recommended (about 5 minutes left out of the Penitentiary)
Make sure you wander around. Loved the audio tour . Precise and to the point. Amazing history! $10 with student ID.
This is one of the best historical tours I've ever taken. Great work.
One look at the brick towers peering over the walls & you know this place means business. Ghostly business. Even if you don't bump into a specter, there's plenty of creepy stuff to snap pictures of.
Love how interactive it is! Plenty to see and do! Did the self guided audio tour - perfect!
This was an amazing, fun and scary long haunted house easily almost an hour. The wait wasn't long. The characters were great and they can touch you. Worth the drive and the amount. Parking 20$ - Erik Cintron
