What I think of when someone tells me that we are going to a bistro . The service is quick and efficient. The food is on point. The jar of cornichons , mustard , and bread is irresistible.

There is no getting to the marrow of Montreal's restaurant scene without a thorough introduction to its bellwether bistro . L'Express is all atmosphere and a perfect menu of classics. [Eater 38 Member]

Great atmosphere and great food. Highly recommend the bone marrow and the profiteroles à l'erable– so delicious. They also have their own cornichons you can snack on, which I loved.

Endlessly open and always lively in atmosphere, it’s as if time has frozen and left you in a classic 1920s French bistro . Open until 2am so you can head over for oysters and tartare after partying. Read more

Solid menu - bone marrow didn’t disappoint and super interesting octopus and lentil appetizer , but the real star was the mushroom ravioli mmmm

Bokyung Park

Parisian-style bistro . Ile Flottante was amazing. There is another L’Express in Manhattan which I made the wrong reservation there. The waiter wittingly said, “ You should hurry up to get there.”

Jake Cohen

Classy yet casual with great service. Classic French in a old school setting. Open late . Love this place.

Alex Klieger

Pickles were good as an appetizer (everyone gets them). Profiteroles were great for dessert (pictured here). The ravioli is filled with liver , so be prepared for that (I was not).

Green Hippie

Was in Montreal during the holiday season and L'Express was the only place open when we were looking for brunch . Outstanding food! Their mustard in BOMB!!!

From Bill Addison: swat off the small petals of cabbage atop the hunks of bone marrow and spread the unctuous goodness inside over slices of toasted baguette . Read more

Really lovely place. Superlative food in a setting that's upscale but still maintains some classic charm. A might bit pricey but not painful by any means.

Emily M.

By far my favorite meal/dining experience in Montreal. Huge mason jar of cornichons on the table with dinner - amazing! Service was on point. Get the steak frites - a classic choice!

Stephanie Vandoninck

I really recommand this place! A place where the locals eat . The staff is very helpful and friendly and the food is delicious. Try the ravioli and the profiteroles as dessert .

Benson Bleier

Super traditional French cuisine . Would recommend for someone in the mood for bone marrow or paté etc. The bar looks like a good place to drink some nice wine and order an appetizer .

This traditional-style French bistro epitomizes Parisian cool w/ its black & white checkered tiles, white linen tables, and devilishly good-looking and well-dressed wait staff . Read more

Steak tartare (spicy option) is I believe the best I've ever had. The dipping sauce for fries (some creamy mayo/mustard) is great. Nice service, lovely for a late weekend lunch .

Nick K

The ravioli (with veal and pork in a savory broth) was divine. The poached salmon with parsley mashed potatoes was also lovely. Finish with profiteroles !

There are Montreal restos, and there's L'Express. Busier, noisier, and miles more chic than most. This traditional-style French bistro epitomizes Parisian cool w/ its black & white checkered tiles.

Pam Gilford

Nothing but great things to say about this Montreal staple: order the bone marrow , chicken liver pate , steak frites and the ravioli . Wash it down with good French wine . Servers are awesome!

Susan Loh

Steak tartare and steak frites were the winning dishes. Skip the shrimp risotto . And check out the photos to spot which staff members have been working there since 1986!

Betty Mak

I think it's the best French in Montreal. The service was excellent without being overbearing and they aren't pretentious like many.

Christopher Ong

Make a reservation if eating after 6:30 PM. Definitely try that how your steak with fries . If on a budget, eat your way through the free bread and pickles with mustard .

Eddie Cyrino

Really good place, I totally recommend it!!!! ????????????????

Jessica

Very Parisian! Difficult to dine unless you have a reservation , so make sure to book yourself a seat!!

Vincent M

Raviolis are a favorite, with a nice glass of Bourgogne. A true classic in Montreal.

John Koen

Rognons à la moutarde (Kidneys in mustard sauce ), duck confit

Been here twice in the span of 3 yrs, left full and satisfied. Intimate Parisian decor. Attentive service. Steak and frites . Quail and wild rice .

Sandra Figueiredo

Can't go wrong with the steak frites and the mushroom ravioli are really delicious as well . Ask for the little cornichons .

Drew Diver

Amazing staff , the homemade ravioli and steak with fries were other worldly. Make sure you reserve or get their early.

Ting

My mouth waters thinking about that chicken liver mousse with pistachios atop of that amazing bread with a bottle of beau jolais.

Lauren Simmons

The original and the best for nouveau French. Fish prepared magically and well-curated wine list , but steak and fries are the backbone.

Victoria U.

Steak tartare and bone marrow - your arteries will forgive you later.

Sam Raissa

Authentic french cuisine and very nice staff . Make sure to ask for the floating island for desert !

Joce Yu

Veal ravioli was to die for. The mushrooms and veal stock complimented perfectly. Lovely French meal.

Kristen Maguire

Steak frites is a must. Perfectly cooked, and melts in your mouth

Sean Hull

Had the chicken breast ,wife had steak . The chicken was tender not awesome. The steak ,does not deserve recognition for quality, technique or flavor. Pass, much better options available in Montreal.

Oliver Bouchard

Delicious French bistro food and very reasonable prices.

Jowi Taylor

This is my dependable and perennial Montreal check in. I sit at the bar and order Os a Moelle with a glass of Cote du Rhone. Parfait !

Lauren Cherney

The "real" Balthazar. Don't miss the bone marrow , but if you must, the quiche Lorraine and steak frites won't let you down.

The Daily Meal

The Pot au Fer was done absolutely right. The duck confit salad was delicious. Very much recommended.

Croque Monsieur is the most affordable thing on the menu but is delicious and indulgent.
