Horace Walpole , art historian and son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole , built his ‘little Gothic castle ’ over 30 years, recreating medieval styles that helped spearhead the Gothic revival.
Excellent guides in each of the magnificently Gothic Rooms. You'll need to book in advance, especially in summer. Superb three hours spent here
Walpole bought the house as a cottage in 1747 and transformed it into a medieval-style mansion that suggested in its atmosphere the setting of his famous Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto (1765)
