First Fridays is a great time to visit. There's a cocktail party in the Koch Gallery and the rest of the museum is pretty empty on a Friday night. Best of both worlds if you want to socialize or not.

In the Art of the Americas wing, don't miss the "Behind the Scenes" galleries , which have a very meta focus ("How does the museum decide what to display?"). They're almost hidden and, as such, empty.

Great place. Their modern and contemporary collection isn’t that comprehensive, and some of the exhibitions aren’t exactly “fine art ” at all.
