The original installation was constructed from 1820-1824 as Fort St. Anthony. It received its name upon its completion in 1825 in honor of Colonel Snelling, who commanded the regiment that built it.
Really awesome day out, great views , lovely staff , very good explanations of what the fort was for etc. Especially good talk from on the local native american population and "indian wars".
Historic Fort Snelling is a Twin Cities treasure, located just a few minutes away from the airport .
So much more to do and see than expected. Go early and bring sunglasses on a sunny day.

A cool piece of History tucked right into the twin cities .
Go there this weekend, they have on display F4 Phantoms, F16's, Mustangs, C-130s, and a number of armored vehicles to climb around.

To find the chapel, drive through historic Ft Snelling, past the welcome center until you have to take a sharp right. The road goes up and you'll see the chapel on your left. Some parking available. - Zach Duckworth
