Buried beside monument is a dog called Giro, his owner was German ambassador. In 1936 they draped the swastika flag over his coffin as they carried him down the stairs in front of York’s monument .
This column commemorates the second son of George III. As commander-in-chief of the British Army he is immortalised as the ‘the Grand Old Duke of York, he had 10,000 men...’
