Definitely worth a trip when you visit Melbourne but there's always temporary exhibits coming to keep it fresh. I wouldn't waste money throwing it into the fountain out the front. Send it my way
The Joseph Brown collection at the NGV: Australia is absolutely spectacular. All the best names in Australian art over the past two centuries, all in the same place, completely free of charge!
Terrific art museum ! Check out the Salon Room: room full of paintings , and Japanese art and Chinese burial practices. Probably the best museum in Melbourne. Excellent looseleaf tea in The Tea Room .
Ai WeiWei &Andy Warhol exhibit was worth doing. Plenty of interaction, you get out of it what you put into it. Whole complex is well organised by the layout of the 15-18th stuff needs to be refreshed.
Start at the top with the most interesting contemporary art pieces. The lower floors are classic religious / portraits / tableware.
Beautiful gallery filled with amazing art from periods across many centuries. Whether you're a local or just visiting, this is a gallery worth visiting. Make sure you out the temporary exhibits
Awesome museum . Many free exhibits spanning different civilizations and cultures. The Escher and nendo exhibit is worth checking out!
I love what the have on at the moment and the fact that most of the gallery is free. A few exhibitions you had to pay a fee of $12 - it's all worth it for the art .
The permanent collection is really worth checking out too (even if they have great touring exhibitions ).
Saw the Hokusai exhibit , loved every bit. The NGV is a great way to spend an evening or weekend, with fantastic exhibitions constantly on display 👍🏼
The featured exhibit was $26 but it was weiwei and Warhol so it was worth it. Very cool back yard with music , comfy chairs , weird sculptures and beer !
My favourite gallery . Great atmosphere, constant exhibits , lovely areas to hang out (make sure you check out the back gardens ) and attentive friendly staff .
Often crowded in a good way. This gallery is Victoria’s premiere exhibition space combing contemporary art with historical works a great place to lose yourself for an hour or six.
Sunday sessions in summertime here are the best and free!! With well known bands. 😉 #cider #goodmusic what more do you need.
Always great art selection and temporary exhibition . Nice to sit near the fountain to enjoy the sun.
There is always something for everyone to do. Fun games for children and amazing exhibitions for adults. Never gets boring!
Members room is a great place for a quiet catchup with a friend after, before, during or even when not viewing ! Free tea and coffee (not instant!) and guest comes in free with member.
Exhibitions are often unreasonably (and irresponsibly) crowded so bring your mask. Many of the (free) permanent exhibitions are at the Fed Square area not St Kilda Rd.
Impressive gallery space. Interesting permanent collection... High quality traveling exhibition like Warhol & WeiWei
Be sure to take the time to read all the historical references in the Chinese Burial Exhibit . The stories add so much to the experience (as does the amazing timeline at the entrance).
Always some good exhibition going on there ! Recommend to rent the guided audio ! Makes everything much better !
The free tours are totally worth it, you'll learn some of the history of Melbourne & Victoria by a super enthusiastic guide.
A major work by architect Roy Grounds, the National Gallery Of Victoria features a 4 storey high hall and multi-coloured roof by Leonard French #LoveOHM
The oldest public art museum in Australia. Striking understated architecture and a substantial collection of Australian and international art . People have stolen Picassos here.
Always interesting exhibitions with great audio guides. Check out Warhol - Wei Wei before it closes down on 24 April 2016.
Beautiful museum and a great European 19/20th centuries exhibition .
Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei exhibit was intense. Come early and plan a few minutes for a mental break between halls.
Great art collection from traditional to modern arts they have it all...
Lots for kids, great stuff tucked away up stairs too. Well worth the visit for the free exhibits alone.
Free entrance! Interesting exhibits . Do take time to walk around and explore.
It is always fun to visit the NGV. Great venue with great creative themes.
Cool exhibitions going all year round. Cool looking security guys :))
Take time to visit the exceptional National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Australia. This public gallery houses an extensive Aboriginal and Australian fine art collection . Read more
Worth for a visit. Go early , so you may spend more time there ..
This is one of my three must not miss Aussie galleries . Check in for whole hearted cultural fullfilment.
Great gallery . Good collection of European and Asian art through the ages.
Great art selection, it's a worthwhile visit. I also like the structure itself.
Fabulous Australian art exhibition but they don't take Bitcoin yet
10/10 the best place to go on a rainy day in Mel!
Great all round art gallery , top floor excellent contemporary art
The Picasso Century was irresponsibly crowded meaning you were unable to spend adequate time viewing the pieces comfortably. Fewer Picasso pieces than expected (around 30%) but was long!
I really love it here but the staff let it down. so rude and ready for retirement. please u work at an art gallery not a national security office chill out !!
Located next to ACMI, housed various art exhibition from paintings to Minangkabau head dress .
With the exception of some temporary exhibits , NGV is free to visit as often as you like.
Awesome place and it is FREE, easily spent half day here. Thanks Melbourne!
There needs to be more proper signages especially inside the exhibit areas.
Great collections and truly amazing special exhibitions
Great exhibitions ! Free Wifi
Head to the 20th Century Design room on the 3rd floor and take a photo of Marc Newson's Lockheed Lounge . Then go out to the garden and sit in one of his white "Felt Chairs" while enjoying the view .
Check out a ALL the exhibitions not just the permanent displays!
Hightea for two for only $45 :D - Chris Liew
The NGV 3-year membership is well worth it if you’re a local, averages - J

They've got a sweet little Mambo exhibit on in here till the 22nd of Feb (2015) - Tomfoolery
Big screen tvs, big open spaces. Lovely long evenings spent here - Ali Cotter
The design of this place is just amazing. Lovely architecture and rich with tradition. - Venoth
An excellent war memorial with lots of information. The view of the city from this point is also excellent. Worth visiting this place. - Venoth
