I've been here a few times and it's still my fave museum in Sacramento. It's a lot of fun because the scenes are very well constructed and you can interact with many of them as well !
If you have small kids invest in the caboose club. $25 for the year, child and adult free every visit and free train rides in the summer! Great air conditioning when it's to hot to be outdoors.
Sleeper car was amazing as they rock the car so its like being on an actual moving train . You can try to operate a high speed train simulator on 2nd floor!
There was so much more than I expected. The train cars were fabulous! There was more with every turn and you could either board them or look in the windows. I had never seen a post office car.
Did you know? Running from Sacramento to Folsom, the Sacramento Valley Rail Road was California's first. The route opened on January 1, 1856 paving the way for the Transcontinental Railroad. Read more
Fascinating museum . They have occasionally held workshops photographers to come learn how to shoot in dim museum lighting
Best teain museum possibly anywhere. Free museum day on the first Saturday in February makes this a bargain.
If you park at k street mall you can get three hours free parking with validation and the hourly rate is a lot less than the old sac garages . There is a nice tunnel that goes right under the freeway.
Very interesting! Make sure to join a 40-minutes tour on your way out of the theater .
The California State Railroad Museum retells the history of the railroad, and has 21 restored locomotives and other railcars, including a Pullman-style sleeping car and a Railway Post Office.
Plenty to see and learn! Great for kids and train enthusiasts!
One of the most beautiful museums I've ever seen ❤
This is my favorite place to visit in Old Sac ! The rocking sleeper car is the best!

Best Railroad Museum in the West!
You can hop onto any of the trains and photography is strongly encourage!
I've wanted to go here since I was a kid. I got there early and walked around. They were getting the engine ready for the rides. Was cool
Don't miss the sleeper car and dining car in the back. The sleeper car shakes!
Nice, but fairly small. The human mannequins are unnecessary and creepy.
Trains to play with upstairs for the kids.
In the sleeping car : Don't let the mannequin freak you out!
Sleeper car rocks like the train is moving
Fun & educational
