The United States Marine Corps War Memorial represents this nation's gratitude to Marines and those who have fought beside them. While the statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the USA.

If you go to just the right spot to to the west of the memorial, across the grass. You can see the Washington Memorial in the background. Great place to take a picture.
I knew of this memorial but didn't realize it was dedicated to USMC. Visited with Stars and Stripes Honor Flight (6.11.16) - photo shows all Marine vets of our group with some current members.

Worth the walk but leave it till last as it is a short walk from here to Roslyn metro stop to get you back into Washington. Or if you have the energy, walk to DC across the bridge from here
They are currently in the process of renovating and restoring the Iwo Jima memorial so You are not able to get up close and personal with it. 11/14/17.

Go in the summer on Tuesday evening to the memorial and see the sunset ceremony with the marine corp band . Starts @ 6:30pm.

Great park and view of the monuments across the river . Dont forget to go to the Netherlands Carillon if you are here, especially if the tulips are in bloom

Great place to watch the fireworks over DC for the 4th of July. Get there early to snag a place in front of the bell tower!

More than just the memorial. The surrounding park is beautiful and a great place for a picnic . Excellent views of DC.
It is Iwo Jima! Nothing comes lose in bringing emotion to the surface in stone faced Marines .

Make sure to count the hands!! It's said that there are 11 instead of 10 hands...the extra hand is the hand of God.

From here you can see the State Capitol, Washington Memorial , and Lincoln Memorial all bunched up together. It's an awesome view !
Look closely around the base of the memorial – the location and date of every major Marine Corps engagement to date is inscribed there.
You can walk here from the Rosslyn metro station . 4ish blocks.
The parade is worth a visit! It's beautiful!

Visit this location during the summer at 7pm for the sunset performance of the Marine Corps Band , they also practice at 7:30 am in the same spot.
