The submarine Growler first opened at the Intrepid Museum in 1989 and is the only American strategic missile submarine open to the public. Growler offers museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up inspection of the once “top-secret” missile command center.

I've toured many submarines incl. WWII & cold war boats both from the U.S. and USSR. This one is interesting because it was built early in the cold war and still has some of the WWII boat grittiness.
Fifty-five years ago, the submarine Growler was commissioned on August 30, 1958 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Be sure to stop by for a walk through the sub when you visit the Museum .
This cold war submarine is fantastic to visit. Veterans will tell you how it works and how was the life aboard. A must see in NY.
Amazing to see how living and working in a submarine is like. If you're claustrophobic, do not join the tour - the space is definitely cramped.
Good to get some insight to some history you can't see anywhere else in the US. This nuclear submarine was only operational for 6 years. They couldn't tell me how much it cost to build.
Earlier this week, two Growler former crew members came by the Museum : Tom Jones ('58-'59) and Owen O'Rourke ('61-'63). Thank you for your service!

It's simply amazing to be able to be this close to a real ship. And watching Gravity underneath was pretty great too! - Kelsey Lee
good experience and good break from the hustle and bustle. - P G
Fantastic museum, a bit expensive but definitely worth it, save at least a 1/2 day to explore - Patrick Baskin
Beautiful historic building and gardens. However, they're missing a clearer narrative to their permanent exhibition. My favorite part was the herbs garden. - Carolina Ribeiro
One of my favorite museums. It's small so even if you just find yourself in the area pop in. It's not large. - Amy B
It’s an iconic aircraft. Incredible to see how engineering of regular planes and fighter jets were merged to create it! - Felipe Garcia
