Gathland State Park was once the mountain home of George Alfred Townsend, a Civil War journalist. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail traverses the park and passes the monument base.

This is a really impressive, unique historic site along the Appalachian Trial.
This park has excellent Appalachian Trail access. Go north 3 mi to White Rocks or south 6 mi to Weaverton Cliffs.

The trails are not very suitable for horses (very narrow, steep, and rocky). The trees are not trimmed high enough for riders. We rode the yellow and red trails. Would be a very nice hike. - Christie Dowling
