The true meaning of this ancient creation has been lost in time. Was it a temple for sun worship, a healing centre, a burial site or perhaps a huge calendar? How did our ancestors carry the mighty stones from so far away and then build this amazing structure? It never fails to impress.
Off A344 Rd Amesbury Wiltshire SP4 7DE United Kingdom
You don't HAVE to pay. There is a footpath that takes you along the side of the fenced area. Not quite as close as the ticketed walk & doesn't include the audio guide but still...
You can walk to the henge for free. If the entrance fee prevents you from visiting, the henge is 1.4 miles from the visitor centre. The view is more restricted then paying visitors but still worth it.
Don't bottleneck at the beginning. Once you move in a little people disperse so you won't have to wait forever to take a picture. However the best (or closest) views are in the first 1/4 or 1/3
That place is just amazing! Breads story, humanity challenge, emotions... Can't wait to come back! I wish I can do camping in here over night!!! As a English Heritage member... I strongly recommend ❤️
To get the most of it, go into the museum and also listen to the audio tour . The official app includes it. Don't try to sneak in or you will kindly get escorted out, saw it happen!
Either (A) Don't pay & walk from visitor's centre to view it from behind the fence , or (B) Pay 4 full tour that gets you inside circle & tells you the full history. Waste of money to pay & skip tour .
Really amazing site... incredible sight to see and hear theories about all aspects of it, as you walk around it on guided path + come early or late for less crowds!!!
The free audio guide app is not the one linked to from the WiFi landing page (the generic English Heritage one), but a dedicated app for Stonehenge. Get that one and bring your headphones.
Visit as part of a tour with English Heritage and got to ride on the shuttle bus to Stonehenge. Very interesting history and mysteries around it. Good for a short 1 hour visit.
Stonehenge is not the only monument at this place. There are at least 5 more monuments a mile from the main attraction . You can find a path to them on the photographs near Stonehenge main stones.
A great idea for a day trip from London - Stonehenge! Just 90 minutes from the capital!
Before you go, apply for after hours access INTO Stonehenge at http://www.english-heritage.org.uk. Otherwise you have to view from several 100 feet away during normal hours with the tour buses .
The nearest train station to get there is Salisbury (only 90 minutes from London Waterloo). Then you can take a "Stonehenge tour bus " at the Salisbury station to get on the site. It's magic.
It's simply one of those trips that you need do. It's amazing to actually see and surprisling so close to London.
Listen carefully to the audio tour and try to take in the magnitude of what these ancient people did. It's truly amazing!
If you are willing to walk to the site and don't want an audio guide or see the exhibition , you save the entry price: just walk past the ticket office and not pay, no appears to check on busy days.
Visit exhibition first and take shuttle bus to go to see the stones. Then you will more enjoy the site. Very interesting.
Nice place! Really would like to touch it but seeing it is great experience as well . Can't understand greedy ppl which travel there only to take a pic standing next to the fence lol must go in!
Learn briefly the history at the visitor centre first and follow the audio guide . Join the Stonehenge Tour buses from Salisbury if you don't have a car.
Lovely revisit after some 20 years. New Visitors centre and bus area require shuttle service to the stones
Plug in your headphones into the audio guide and you'll be hands free to listen and take pictures at the same time.
We arrived at 6pm couldnt enter the car park so we Just parked the car at the road side and walk across the road towards the fence . Remember to bring a portable chair or ladder to take pic. :p
It's an amazing and magical place. You have to pay for the entrance but you get a free audioguide with your tickets.
Absolutely stunning. Take your time and do the full tour . Who knows when you'll ever return?
Mystical, a true wonder of England. Also makes a great stop on the way from Kent or London to Devon & Cornwall.By coach from victoria station or rideing a car, don't miss it!
Great trip! We drove with golden tours ! Great view but very crowded . Enjoy!
Audio tip useful. You are closest to the stones at the beginning of your tour - probably the best time for photos (depending on the sunlight of course!)
Get there early and use the "side road " behind the structure . The head up the road to the larger and more interactive area.
Breathtaking! Try to arrive near sun set to get the best pics.
If you going from Reading-Pewsey on train , don't mind the map that refers bus stop B. Plan to walk 5min and get to Bus Stop C by the fire station
Best approach is from the small village , Lake . Its a 30minute walk across the fields but far more peaceful and better than the traffic island that is the approach from the A303
Nice, but too expensive (around £15)! Go by your own car in the morning, when its not too crowded , and see it for free beyond the fence .
Take a bus (10 min drive) or walk (45 mins) to get the the stones. Great audio tour
Love the new layout. You get to see the stones so much closer now. Well worth seeing it for the fourth time:)
Best thing is to spend half a day here with a picnic basket
One off the bucket list. It was freezing cold when we went there so make sure to bring a jacket , ear muffs and hand gloves.
Free wifi at the visitor center. Download the app or pick up an audio guide :)
It is best to first view the Stonehenge in silence from all angles then if you wish to use the audio tour , your own headphones will fit the jack. ☺
Came here right when they opened, which is the best way to do it!
The site itself is pretty but the perspective of the time that has elapsed since the place was built is what makes it amazing.
Go there very early, when it has just opened, you'll be able to take great pictures without the lot of people that are usually in.
Bit pricy , but worth a visit! Take the bus next to the visitors center. Much quicker!
Spectacular. Ten thousand years old and can still accurately calculate the calendar year.
The stone circle itself is a bit disappointing, but it's definitely worth a visit!
Each one has different history like the Horseshow od Sarsen Trilothons
I loved it here. Being able to see the remnants of history is better than just reading about it
It's just a bunch of rocks but I'd still recommend everyone to go there at least once. I was really impressed.
Great place, the exhibition is great. Be mindful about weather is usually very windy at the stones..
The town of Salisbury is 8 miles south and the beautiful medieval Salisbury Cathedral is a must. The famous Magna Carta is also housed there. Read more
Rocks in the middle of nowhere, but still AMAZING! The landscape is gorgeous too.
Beautiful visitor center. Great place to grab a bite if you're on an all-day tour. Clean bathrooms. Neat stuff to look at in the gift shop -- though, it was pretty pricey. - Maddie Lippincott
Just breathtaking well worth spending the time when you are at Stonehenge to go here too - Daniel Russell
Make it your first stop when in bath. Can get crowded with a long queue waiting to go in. The audio guide system is really good. It is definitely something not to be missed when in Bath - Shamsa Abdulrahman
Not sure about the bad rating. It’s decent. Hot & cold food options, coffee, drinks, lots of seating, friendly staff. Great scones and fairly priced. What’s not to like?! - Beth Gossip
