Great food found here in the mature estate of TPY. The hawker centre had been renovated and is bright and airy. Don't miss the oyster omelette and cendol from Dove Desserts .
Fishball noodles : Some of the fishballs fr Chao Zhou Fish Ball Noodle #01-20 r bigger than golf balls! Home-made, they r bouncy & hv bite. Savour the taste over plain noodles . Yum!
The traditional handmade Hainanese Kueh, known as "Yi Bua " and their Laksa are their signature dish. A must try in this hawker place. Can find them on the Facebook... hainanxiaochi
Vegetarian options : vegetarian bee hoon (#01-37 popular), fried carrot cake , popiah (fresh spring roll ), beancurd , chwee kueh (steamed rice cakes ), yutiao (dough fritters ), pancakes , local desserts
Nice food court that has many well known shops from popiah , fried oyster and chendol. A nice place to have good meal with wonderful starter, main dish and dessert .
Fried bee hoon . Economic Fried Bee Hoon & Noodles #01-26 sells affordable breakfast . Fried noodles not as flavourful as nearby Hup Lee #01-11. Ran out of vege dish at 9:30am when I was there
Fried bee hoon . Islandwide chain Hup Lee operates here at #01-11. Expect the same menu, incl nasi lemak & crispy fried chicken wings . Bee hoon is offered in light & dark soy sauce . This combo $4.10
Chendol from Dove Desserts #01-21. Home-style goodness. Thoroughly enjoyable. Opens from lunch to pre-dinner
Penang fried kway teow . Get ur fix from Bao Kee #01-41. Run by an elderly couple. Besides the mild 'wok hei', I appreciated the fact that they used fresh prawns
Did u know? The neighbourhood & roads r named after Melaka-born Choa Kim Keat. He made his fortune in the tin business w Straits Trading Company. Source: Remember Singapore blog
Char kway teow . Toa Payoh Fried Kway Teow 01-51 sees lots of regulars during meal times. CKT is wet & fragrant. Don't let the lack of queue fool u. Place an order & tell them ur table number
Wantan noodles . Sampled A) Guang Zhou #01-41, B) Tanjong Rhu #01-49, & C) Hong Wen Roasts #01-61. B is the well-rounded winner. A has nice wantans but salty. C has the better char siew (BBQ pork )
Chai tow kway (fried carrot cake ): So love d old school style at Xin Ji #01-60. It's chunky pieces, just like d good old days. Can taste d smokiness of d frying pan. Shiok !
Ban Mian. Homestyle & generous bowl from Grandmother Handmade Noodles #01-12. Lots of vege . Soup served with egg white . $3.50 for this bowl, w egg added
Entrance to toilets has the popular dragon-inspired mosaic mural . Find the dragon playgrounds at nearby Blk 28 Lor 6 & Blk 240 Lor 1 Toa Payoh
Kaya butter toast set ($3.20). 157 Coffee House #01-57 uses traditional bread . Well-toasted & generous with kaya spread ????????
Roasted meat : Locals hv a little secret. Hong Wen Charcoal Roasted Meat #01-61 sells out of char siew , roasted pork & duck by 9am on weekends! Tried getting wantan noodles but char siew was long gone!
Popiah : True to locals' feedback, Old Long House Popiah #01-03 is definitely 1 of d better popiahs . Generous filling (unlike those @ Newton Circus ), & nice punchy combo of garlic , chilli , sweet sauce
Industrial fans. The food centre has been installed with such HVLS fans, so it’s generally cool & breezy throughout the day
Mixed sliced fish soup ($5.50, plus extra fried egg $1). Soup prepared by Min Zhong #01-42 was overly salty for my liking. Thankfully both sliced & fried fish had no excessive baking soda taste
Vegetarian bee hoon . Bee hoon from Ru Yi #01-29 had a wetter style, compared to Yu Yuan #01-37. Nothing outstanding about dishes
Pancake . Granny's Pancake is yummy but shouldn't there be a limit on how fluorescent orange the filling should look, before the sweetened grated coconut looks radioactive?
There's a stall @ d mkt #01-110 that sells fresh(!) coconut milk , so that u dun hv to. Gr8 for curries & kuehs. Nice ;-)
Try Economic Fried Bee Hoon Noodle at #01-26. Traditional fried vermicelli served with pickled green chillies .
Prawn noodles : What I like abt Toa Payoh Hokkien Prawn Mee #01-36 is their robust soup . Natural-tasting & thick, full of prawn stock. Thumbs down 4 no 'taugeh' (bean sprouts ) or 'kangkong ' (spinach )
Bak Chor Mee (minced meat noodles ). Forgettable bowl from Lau Pa Sat Minced Meat Mee #01-02. Ingredients appear factory-made
The sauce is well made and thr mang kwang well cooked. Could be better if they put in chinese sausage and prawn slices. Still one of the best popiah around. ..
HOM AROY THAI FOOD is so far the most authentic Thai food I ever try in Singapore Hawker Centre. Delicious n reasonable price.
Economic rice (chai png). Lai Heng #01-08 is popular because it offers freshness & variety, as well as being affordable ????????
Master Chicken , Stall#01-18, Yummy Boneless Chicken Rice from $2.50 onwards. Operating Hours:1000-1900 (Tue-Sat), 1000-1530 hrs, Closed on Mondays.
Chicken rice . Decent serving from Lai Lai #01-18. Rice was aromatic. Chicken meat could be more springy. Chilli sauce was punchy!
The traditional handmade Hainanese Kueh, known as "Yi Bua " and their Laksa are their signature dish.
Vegetarian bee hoon . Basic plate $2.50 from Yu Yuan #01-37. Soy crisps were a tad salty. Opt for some sauce for a wet meal ????
Coin-operated pay phone. Find this at the back of the wet market
Thai food . Unimpressed with the padthai ($5) from Hom Aroy Thai Food #01-10. It lacks aroma
New HK style wonton mee tasted pretty good esp the roast duck , usually sold out by afternoon. Located beside the good old carrot cake stall .
Duck noodles ($4). Average preparation from Lorong 7 Kway Chap & Braised Duck #01-38. Duck meat was salty
Chao Zhou Fish Ball Noodle is nice freshly hand make fish balls but only available Thurs - Sun business so darn good the long queue may make u give up !
Braised duck rice : Tried fr Kway Chap stall #01-32 based on 4SQ tips. Disappointingly, duck meat lacked d fragrance dat accompany a good braise. Their herbal soup was also too salty :-P
Beef noodles world best and all the uncles ever so friendly . Happy eating... just too bad I've decided to abstain beef .
