The Peter Paul Rubens ’ canvases on the house’s ceiling survived a fire in 1698 that destroyed the majority of the Palace of Whitehall and spent the Second World War down a mine in Wales. Read more

This was the only part of Whitehall Palace , one of the greatest in Europe, not destroyed by the fire of 1698. Charles I was executed on a scaffold built at window-level outside this building.
