Nathan Phillips is an urban plaza that forms the forecourt to Toronto City Hall. The square is the site of concerts, art displays, a weekly farmers' market, the winter festival of lights, and other public events, including demonstrations.

By the old and new city hall , this is where many outdoor events take place in Toronto - new year's eve celebrations, rallies, TV competitions, marathons end and start etc. Located by the Eaton Center
Skating in the winter is fun, but it's so busy that the ice is pretty choppy. In the summer it's a great meeting place, one of my favourite memories is seeing all of the chalk tributes to Jack Layton.
Lots going on here in the winter. If you love to skate , you can rent them and it is fun at any age! They serve hot chocolate and some fast foods , but a bit pricey . Bring a thermos!
Come here at night...the Toronto sign lights up and change colors every couple minutes!

Go to any corner of this square, and you'll find a great photo op. Try shooting from low on the ground to capture the epic curve of the Toronto City Hall 's buildings.

Nathan Philips' pursued an aggressive agenda of demolishing heritage structures throughout the city , to 'modernize.' Large blocks of downtown, landmark buildings, and neighbourhoods were destroyed.
Thr free outdoor concerts and firework shows are super fun!!

If it's a hot day, bring lots of water, sunscreen , hats and sunglasses, etc. There is shade under the walkways, but the main area gets screaming hot in the sunshine.
City hall is here -- and the famous Toronto sign . In the winter this has an ice rink .

Farmers market on Wednesdays in summer and fall. The pecan tarts from Andrew's Scenic Acres are the best.

Nathan Phillips was first elected to Toronto City Council in 1926. He served as mayor from 1955 until he lost to 1962. He served 36 years on city council. He was dubbed "mayor of all the people".

In 2005, a proposal to sell the naming rights to Nathan Phillips Square unleashed a storm of opposition from many Torontonians, including Nathan Phillips' grandchildren. The proposal was withdrawn.
