"A" Mountain (Hayden Butte Preserve)

The Tempe Normal School class of 1918 was responsible for installing the first letter on Tempe Butte. The school changed its name to Arizona State Teachers College, and in 1938, the letter "A" was installed on the butte.

If you're looking for a short , but steep hike , try "A" Mountain . The hike takes less than an hour and you get an awesome view of Tempe! I suggest going early in the morning to beat the AZ heat!

A Mountain is a great exercise for the whole family. Please bring a bottle of water and stretch before walking up the mountain . If you have a camera , I would recommend taking it for a nice scenery.

At the beginning of each school year, it is painted white to commemorate the new class of students at ASU. During homecoming, there is also a lantern walk. It's a great place to see the city of Tempe.
