While you cannot get close enough to touch the sign, you can still get pretty close – hike the Hollyridge Trail to see the sign from above, and if the weather is clear the views are amazing.

Hollywood sign is beautiful, but it's hard to take a picture next to it from the front. There are very specific location to do take a shot of it though fromthe Griffths Observatory or Runyon canyon.

Guests looking to hike to the Hollywood Sign can take one of three trails to get there – Bush Canyon Trail , Hollyridge Trail and Wonder View Trail .

Christine Yoo

I didn't really care to see the Hollywood sign but decided to do a drive by. Must say the view was still pretty cool. You do have to drive up a very steep road to get to the top but still very cool

Rafael Acosta

The way to get to the behind the sign view , right behind the radio towers (i.e. the closest you can get) is a long hike there and back. But the view you get along the way and at the end, is incredible

Angelenos love a good hike , so why not one with a timeless photo op! Important note: climbing on the sign itself is illegal. So enjoy the great outdoors, take some photos but stay out of trouble.

Film crews often up here (this photo Gary Hayes took during a California Tourism ad). Ignore "road closed" signs (public access) & have a sticky beak as LA goes about making magic under the sign!

Take the Hollyridge trail to the top and survey Los Angeles from above the the immense, multi-story HOLLYWOOD letters . Consider how strange and wonderful this city is.

Taking a picture with Hollywood sign is a must do in LA. The best place to take a picture with hollywood sign is Canyon Lake Dr. That's the closest location you can get to the sign by car.

HISTORY

The sign was originally constructed in 1923 to promote a subdivision at the top of Beachwood Canyon called Hollywoodland; "land" would later be dropped in 1945 when the area was deeded to the city .

Los Angeles

While the sign’s grounds are barred from public access, you can still get great angles for photos. From Franklin go N on Beachwood; turn L at Ledgewood. Right at the 3-way intersection onto Deronda.

David Alexander

Hike all the way up to the back side of sign. As you come down do the center for some pics. Pack a lunch and attempt to hike in the mornings summer time.

Denis

Seems that it's impossible to get on Mt Lee Dr by car. Tried several roads but every time was barred with a barrier. So be ready to hike at some point ;)

Jack Louissaint

It's a long walk took me about an hour but the views of the city is well worth it. Bring light clothing and plenty to drink you're going to need it

Silent Hollywood

LA Times publisher Harry Chandler dedicated the Hollywoodland sign in 1924 to publicize his new Beachwood Canyon subdivision. Each 50 foot letter was once covered in lights. Now that’s advertising!

Don't hike after sunset . You will probably get lost on the trails . If you do get lost don't panic, just trying find a trail that goes down the canyon.

Khalid Badughaish

To reach there and get a good view for photo let your GPS go to " sunset ranch hollywood"

What trip to Hollywood would be complete without a visit to the iconic sign? Fun fact: The 45-ft. tall letters read "Hollywoodland" in 1923 when it was built as an ad for a housing development .
