Extensive and FREE. A great way to pick up some details on Chinese history and culture. We found the bronze & pottery exhibits particularly well done. All signs are also in English.
Beautifully curated history museum . Capacity limited so come earlier in the day. Can't beat the (free) admission. All descriptions written in English and Chinese. Splurge ¥40 for the audio guide .
Impressive in its sheer quantity. The fourth floor's collection of traditional ethnic minority costumes offers a refreshing burst of colour when you get tired of looking at yellowed scrolls. Free. Read more
Shanghai Museum is famous for the bronze artworks. It also has a great collections of furnitures , paintings and calligraphies, but you need to arrive there early to avoid the long queue.
Take time out from viewing artefacts and have some green tea and cake in the cafe . A great way to rest and revive when feeling overwhelmed by all the treasures in the Museum .

Best mainland Chinese museum I ever saw. Place is huge and there's a lot to see. Would compare it to national palace museum in Taiwan.
It opens everyday but come here on workday mornings otherwise expect 1 hr queueing at the gate. Audio guides available, 300 RMB deposit cash only . Check out the museum shop as well .
The museum displays works of art and antique objects through the different periods of Chinese history dating as far back as 20,000 B.C...
Go early, 9am open. Free admission . Audio guide worth it. Weekends crazy (or closed). Simple cafe second floor.
This is a great museum and it's free! On weekends you have long queues and there are a few scam artists on the outside plaza , so be careful. There is the occasional touring show.
Shop and cafeteria are pre-security. Once you pass the security you only have a cafe on 2F, so be prepared if you want to spend an entire day here.
It is a great museum . Take the audio tour for 40 kuais, help you to understand the meaning of the old art .forecast at least 4 hours of visit.
Free for the first 8000 guests. We got here at 11:00 on a weekday and still got in.
Among 6,000 years of Chinese art and design, don’t miss the landscape paintings by 14th-century master Ni Zan. – Green Guide Editor
Kind of a museum of the whole China but not Shanghai (Zaung-hē). If you are interested in the history of Shanghai, better go to Shanghai History Museum , not here.
Free museum . Worth seeing the 4,000 years of Chinese money exhibit . Beware scams outside the museum -- don't fall for people wanting you to take their photo.
Great to see the exhibits split into areas of interest
Great exhibit of ancient bronze artifacts
A must go for Bronze fan like me
Free museum with awesome artifacts and cultural pieces. Must go!
Go early in the morning on a Monday. No one was there! No line ! Start from the top & work down.
The word free comes to mind!! Very nice great place to take a date!!
Wonderful museum . Bronze and sculpture galleries were terrific.
Chocolate cake (28 rmb) is tasty & fruit cup is fresh. Sandwich has a bit of mayonnaise but ok if you starving (12 rmb). Carrot juice was ok not, too sweet. Cappuccino (30 rmb) is surprisingly nice!
Really huge museum . You'd probably need more than three hours to view all the exhibits . & there's a teahouse at the second floor
If you like pots, this is the place for you. They have ALL the pots!
Worth visiting! Well organized museum . Free entrance
If you like history you'll need a whole day to explore this museum .
They'll take your lighter upon entry (security check), but you can take a random lighter again upon exiting.
Be prepared for a 20-min wait in line to get in. Check the floor map before your visit.
One of China's best history museums . Their bronze , porcelain and Chinese painting exhibits are particularly well done and I would suggest dwelling at every single exibit for at least an hour each.

The place I went to, in the park, only had 2 artists on display. I enjoyed their work, but most people seemed to be there for the rooftop patio. Did I miss a whole wing or something? - Erika Beatty
