If you love fresh authentic Japanese do yourself a favor and seek out this little gem. Steps away from Times Square, Ootoya provides a pleasant respite. Try the sushi bowls, noodles or fresh tofu .

NO TIPPING RESTAURANT! (Or should I say, already included in the price of your meal). Loved the homemade tofu ???? & the set menu is filling even if you get the mini set. Spacious & has great ambience.

Eater

Order the bonito flakes over tofu , over saba, or as a side for soba dipping sauce . Most good dishes are $15 or under, and service is included, so no tipping! Read more

Lunch set! Pictured is the large chirashi bowl. I ordered the small one before but was left wanting more of the fish … obv I couldn’t finish the rest of the set! Delicious and fresh.

Leslie Teng

Kaisen don set is fresh and delicious. All the chicken dishes are flavorful. Matcha anmitsu a good dessert to end the meal with.

Tom

Chain from Japan with authentic Japanese comfort food . Portions are good and food is excellent. Line/wait here can get pretty long.

Borja Burgos

Authentic Japanese food that won't break the bank . In doubt? Eat here. Everything I've had has been great. I'm a fan of the homemade tofu to start, and my personal favorite set is the Katsu Toji. Yum!

Angela Isabel

???????????? Delicious teishoku , price justified by huge portions . Egg custard comes with every set and takes my taste buds to heaven. ????

Jenna Cheung

The Seiro soba noodles was refreshing and the Salmon Saikyo was marinated and grilled so well it literally melted in my mouth. The sashimi 3ten mori and katsu toju were good as well ! Definitely worth!

Lindsey Kim

A bit on the pricey side but it is Amazing. Everything is amazing. The japanese food is very authentic . The sushi bowls are so good, and I always choose "Set" meal. Try the parfait for dessert !

Fabio Has

Nice japanese food , My son and I got the soba and salmon set, a lot of foods é nice set.. At the end, try the traditional anmtisu...

Erica Lovelace

Get here late for lunch and sit at the counter. Miso tonkatsu or soba set. Comfy , elegant and clean setting with homestyle Japanese better than I've had living in SF even.

Marcela Semione

Very friendly and helpful staff . Is different from the Japanese food Brazilians usually have, but very healthy and tasty. They described as "everyday food in Japan". Would definitely recommend it.

Al S

This place really impressed me. Great quality authentic Japanese food , served with care and beautiful presentation. Chicken katsu is superb paired with a Ishigo Koshihikari lager .

Stephanie Ta

Authentic japanese food in a cosy elegant environment, at a decent price. Will come back for sure! Absolutely loved the homemade tofu (tasted like fresh ricotta ), make sure you order it!

Mika Takahashi

Not the cheapest but to me it's good value for the quality of food! You can't go wrong with anything. I love the hijiki on rice . Kaisen-don and grilled fish sets are delicious!

Marie La Rue

Cozy Japanese restaurant . Perfect menu for chilly winter nights. Try the beef & cheese seasonal dish for something different. No tipping establishment. Service can be choppy.

Nate Beatty

Highest quality sushi I've had in a long time, best Japanese food I've had in NYC. Go for lunch for good specials and know that the "mini" portions are large, filling, full meals.

A C

Great, authentic Japanese food (not just sushi ). wonderful tofu salad , delicious tonkatsu , amazing yakitori , it’s all good.

Alastair Tse

Spot the kastuobushi shaving machine that spits out candy floss like bonito flakes !

Go Find Alice

Definitely one of my favorite Japanese lunch spots in town . Awesome lunch sets. Huge variety too!

Ernesto Gutierrez

The tonkatsu and grilled fish are great. Order them as a "set" and you can skip any need for a appetizer . Their house made tofu is out of this world.

Celena Chan

The yakitori , hot pot , chicken katsu and grilled fish are all delicious! I love how most items come in a set!

Skye K.

Yuka carbonated sake drink for the win!! Also absolutely LOVED the chicken katsu with udon here. Service is impeccable!!!

Simon H

Everything is good here but start with the torikuzuan teishoku . Japanese fried chicken rocks hard.

Mika

It's great tasting slightly fancier Japanese comfort food but so overpriced. They only take reservations for opening time (5:30). If you wait at opening, you might be able to walk in.

Ana Luiza Camacho

Amazing homemade tofu and well served hot dishes (the fried chicken with vegetables and spicy and sour sauce makes it worth coming back).

Su Gao

Washu beef is amazing. Yuzu pepper chicken is excellent. Lunch price is about the same, smaller menu. No half bowls at lunch . Great service at the bar (thumbs up San!)

Stan Tran

Incredibly solid option for all sorts of Japanese comfort food . Order your set meal with brown rice to make yourself feel slightly less guilty...

Patrick Lynch

Kaisen Don is the only item I've had. Other dishes look great, too, but I still stick with this. The best chirashi bowl I've had anywhere (so far).

Brian Park

The Kaisen Don is incredible! Fresh Uni, Amberjack, Tuna , Roe , and Tamago, it really has an excellent balance of flavor and freshness.

Jay S

Always upgrade to the set. Can't go wrong with the Kaasanni: fried chicken with grated radish and fried egg

Valeri Karpov

surprisingly authentic Japanese food for times square. don't be turned off by the location - any place with multiple takes on natto on the menu is legit

Go Find Alice

Authentic Japanese food with consistent quality and fresh ingredients . Good for both lunch and dinner !

Léna Le Rolland

Good food. The bento was more than enough food. Service was great. Careful when you make a reservation they have multiple location

E P

Ootoya is my favorite to-go lunch spot with or without a friend. Service can get slow during lunch but the servers are nevertheless attentive and service-oriented.

Tania Platero

I've been craving this food since the last time I came here! Once I moved to NYC, I came again, awesome service and food here! ????????

Lauren Mac

You can tell that a Japanese place is good by the quality of rice and tenderness of fish . This place has both, and fast fast service .

İpek A.

I highly reccomend soba & sake combination. Tips are included so don't make a mistake :)

Ina Li

Tip is included in the price. Love their handmade tofu salad or organic eggs

Serious Eats

Japanese chain with a knack for home-style cooking. Menu includes ramen and sushi , but you're here for the teishoku .

Judy Zhu

Yakitori (dipped in egg yolk ) here is the best! Food is very authentic and be sure to try the ice cream soju dessert !

Rainbow T

High quality food at a decent price. Love the egg custard and love the service here the most out of all the locations.

Lily .

Visited many times. Be aware that it is now a NO TIPPING restaurant . Expect to pay higher prices for your meal. Food still delicious; service still same.

Jinnie L

yakitori ju n katsu ju r yummy~ fresh sushi n pretty good service ~ one of the best japanese restaurant in the city ;)

Barry Kwok

Buta Aspara and Chawan Mushi as was the sashimi - amazing!

Eiman Abdelmoneim

Japanese food chicken , if authentic is judged by number of native Japanese patrons, this place hits it out of the park

Sean Brown

The pork dishes are da ???? and... chawanmushi with every set? ???? and... the service staff are fully compensated by their wage... therefore gratuities are not required? ????????????

Josh van Hulst

Very good! It was authentic in every way and they no lonely require tip as it is included in the meal

H. Neto

Disapointed: Waiters are trying to make me do a fast order, telling the place will close (but it was early in the night) and they simply didn't bring two of my four plates! Not come back in this life!
